You're right, I didn't. I sent an email before the auction ended with an offer that was accepted, and she took the item off ebay. I have just emailed the seller explaining the situation.

Then ebay won't help you. They lost their fees and really frown on something like that. Looks like if the seller chooses to ignore you there is nothing you can do. Sorry

Can I ask a stupid question - but I know this grid is only active in the manual modes - the automatic modes have it preset - Have you tried it on manual or aperture priority settings?

That's not a stupid question. They asked me the same thing at canon. I tried it in all the creative modes. The Canon rep said there's no way to turn the grid off or on. I should at least be able to see it. It's just not there. The piece of glass in the viewfinder wasn't put there by Canon unless it was a mix-up at the factory (which isn't as likely as someone not liking their screen being filled up with black squares and having them replaced with an aftermarket mirror).

Thats a bummer. You can set the focuspoint at the centre permanently, and then reframe the shot, but you then will find it difficult to know exactly where the focus point is and using the focus tracking feature will also be a bit hit and miss.

I wonder what it would cost to change the mirror back again?

I think I may open the camera up to see if the red dot mechanism was disconnected. If so, I'll leave the mirror and just hook the red dot back up and let it shine on the mirror without the boxes. I would prefer the boxes not be there anyway, but the red dots are useful. I'll let you know when I screw my camera up.
