I've tried all the modes. Something is up. The grid and boxes aren't stamped on there.

check this link from DPreview, the 11th box from the top:
Auto Focus â€Â¢ 7-point TTL
â€Â¢ CMOS sensor
â€Â¢ AF working range: -0.5 - 18 EV (at 20°C, ISO 100)
so they should be there. |

Go and click "360 view" and compare everything with yours. Especially the knob that changing the settings (ie: landscape, portrait, action, etc.) That is clearly different on the rebel and rebel xt //consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=11154

1st) There are no focus dots in the LCD. In fact you cannot even see an image in the LCD until after you have taken a picture.
2nd) You will not see a grin by taking the lens off and lookign in. You should see 7 boxes in the while looking through the viewfinder
3rd) Try focusing on something and then scrolling through the focus points. You should see the red dot move from one box to another.
4th) There is no grid and there never will be. You should only see the boxes.
5th) Have you read the manual yet to see the various functions of your camera?

1st) I didn't mean the LCD. Just above the LCD there is another LCD screen. In that screen it shows the focus dots moving.
2nd) I see nothing in the viewfinder except the digital bar at the bottom, and nothing in the mirror or when looking directly into the camera with the lens off.
3rd) There is no red dot to begin with
4th) There are no boxes

Now there is a focusing thing on the back LCD screen (upper left hand corner of it) that correlates to the focus points inside the viewfinder on the Digital Rebel 300....I have that.

Can you give us the link to the auction on Ebay? It should still be there, even though it's over. |

Uh oh... it's sounding more like the Rebel 300. But I'm still waiting on the 360 view to load. (slow connection)

Item Number: 7547623603
The bad part is that she ended it early to sell it to me. Not only that, but she said she had a couple more that she listed. I noticed she already sold one and the person gave her positive feedback. If this is a 300D it's a very clever copy.

But the 300D does have the focusing boxes as well... so I think yours is a broken XT :-( where are the experts? |

I went to steves-digicams.com and checked out the physical views of the Rebel XT vs. the Rebel. It is definately a Rebel XT case, with Rebel XT controls, etc.

If it's broken, we could bombard the seller with nasty e-mails until she returns your money. With 44,000 (or so) DPC members, that'd sure fill up her inbox pretty fast. |

Yeah i have the warranty in the box not filled out. I'm gonna get it to canon fast. If the Rebel 300D has the focusing boxes as well, then colyla saying she can't see them in her 300D, but she can see them on the small LCD like I can? I'm about to go take a photo at the highest resolution then check to see if it is 8 or 6 megapixels.

Take a look at this comparison.
Scroll down and go over the picture, see the changes on the top right of the camera, next to the dial? There is a button on the 300D which is not there on the 350 XT. |

Odds are the seller would refund, but I'd prefer to keep the camera and let the warranty fix it. I got a good deal on it. haha. But good news, sort of. It is definately a rebel XT. I just took a photo and pulled it up on my computer and it showed 7,9xx,xxx pixels.

I checked out the comparison. It's definately the XT body. Also takes 8 megapixel photos. Everything about it says XT except those missing dots! This is driving me crazy! Haha

The only thing I can think of is that maybe this was a refurbished Rebel XT that was refurbished by someone other than Canon, and they replaced the mirror with a generic one or one that wasn't stamped??

Check the lens when on the camera. Is it adjusted to A or M?
A meaning auto and M meaning manual? I´m not sure if this changes the dots but this is a hunch. |

I tried it with both auto and manual focus. I spoke with a Canon representative on the phone and she walked me through a lot of steps in determining the problem. She said more than likely that the glass on the viewfinder that has the squares stamped on them was replaced with a clear glass. Some people prefer this over the boxed one. And in turn, they also disconnected the power going to the part that makes the red dots show on the screen. They also said for my blank warranty card to be effective, I had to provide a bill of sale showing that I bought the camera, and somewhere on the bill of sale it would have to indicate that the camera was new. I won't be able to provide this, so the advertised warranty that came with the camera isn't worth anything.
