I just got my Rebel XT in the mail, and I've pushed every button on this thing trying to make the little square focus boxes show up inside the viewfinder. They just aren't there. No focus boxes and no dots. I've tried in all three focus modes and in auto/av/manual etc.

Bought it used on Ebay :S
The seller had 99.6 positive feedback so I thought it would be ok. I guess not.

Since it's used they may have turned it off. Is this even possible?

I know the nikon D70 has the grid....I didn't know the new rebel xt had it....the regular rebel doesn't....hhmmm. |

just went and looked online and I don't see where the rebel xt has the grid. You did mean like a tic-tac-toe like grid right? To help with rule of thirds?

A grid that looks like this:
[ o ]
[ o ][ o ][ o ]
[ o ]
But not just for the rule of thirds. It's supposed to light up red each focus point that it uses. But in my viewfinder there is nothing except the digital panel at the bottom that lists exposure, aperature, etc.

I don't think you can turn it off. Try taking off the lense, and looking at the mirror thingy inside the camera. It should be stamped right on to it. (make sure you do it in a dust-free place though!!) And on the right of the view-finder, there is a little knob that is for focus...try turning that while looking through the viewfinder.
Hope that helps.

In the regular rebel you turn the camera on, have it in one of the manual modes (p,tv,av,m) then you take you thumb and push the button right by where the camera strap is on the right side then you use the dial on the front of the camera (right by where you push to take the picture) to move the red dots around.
I'm assuming the XT may be close to the same. Did you get a manual?

Yeah this is a problem. The focus knob doesn't change anything except the clarity. I can't see anything stamped on the mirror. Could this mean it's a Rebel disguised as a Rebel XT??? What are some other differences? It says Rebel XT on the sticker in the corner of the camera.

Are you using camera in auto mode or P mode. In P mode, if the same as 300D, will go to user setting. In auto mode should use all focussing points?

Do you mean they're not there at all or they just don't light up? The boxes themselves are physically on the focusing screen, but they may not light up if your lens is on manual focus or there isn't enough contrast to get a focus lock. |

Are you sure it's not there? Look at the camera, face-on when you're looking for it...not at an angle. I just looked again and it's clearly stamped on there. (the dots are)

The button in the upper right that controls the position of the focus dots moves the position of the focus dots on the small lcd monitor, but not inside the viewfinder. Nothing happens inside in the viewfinder when I change the position of focus dots. I can press the shutter halfway down and it beeps. The front element rotates, and it focuses in on something, and then it's ready to take the pic. But no indicating dots.

You can see through the lcd monitor of the pic. you're about to take?? How does that work - i thought you had to look through the viewfinder. |

In my XT the boxes and dots are there even when power is off - I assume they can't be removed. But they will not light up if the lens in is manual mode. |

The focus squares aren't there. I took the lens off and looked inside the camera straight on, from every angle, etc.
