wow -- that's huge.

i hope that every single person who sent in their cam for repair and was charged for it picks up the phone and reads them the riot act. their service for me personally was great, but the ongoing inconsistency of their responses to this situation was patently ridiculous.

an hour passes and only 1 reply? if i had a nikon i'd be upset, especially if i had paid for it to be fixed before the announcement.

Well, I just saw it... This issue was what kept me from going Nikon instead of Canon... I'm happy to see they've finally 'fessed up, anyhhow.

"electronic components related to exposure control in some D70 cameras may, on rare occasions, fail." Nikon says

I've not come across these problems before (happily!) so I don't know the back story - but that statement is so bland I'm surprised it even got reported.

Any electronic components (related to exposure control or not!) may, on rare occasions, fail. Even (*gasp*) on a Canon!

Electronics is neither perfect or immortal...

Yeah, that statement doesn't tell me a whole lot by itself...it's like Canon saying "Hey Mike, you're going to get the occasional Error 99 when you put that old 50mm on there".

It is ironic that these (at least two) forum discussions about this isolated issue are most actively being discussed by Canon shooters. It's like they are so insecure in their purchases that they must slam on someone else̢۪s products. Over the last 20 years I've owned and used over 100 Nikon SLRs, including over 10 of the digital variety, and probably close to 500 lenses in some of the harshest conditions and has needed two repairs. Rotted foam on a 15 year old FM, and a broken AF screw on an 80-200 2.8. I'm sure even Bentley or Ferrari occasionally has to do repairs from faulty parts. Nikon is making good on their mistakes so get over it.

im not insecure at all about my purchase. i just share interesting info. i dont see anyone on this thread insulting nikon. we all know equipment has problems, no matter what the company. thats why they make warranties and service centers. my 300d has burnt out lcd panels inside the viewfinder but im not flipping out as long as i can still shoot.

does this mean that even if I don't have this problem (yet), I can call them and send my camera in?

"Nikon says the problem can occur in certain D70, D2H and F55 cameras, and the company will replace the affected components, even if the camera̢۪s warranty has expired.""

Not really sure it will be quite that easy though.

If you went through 100 SLRs in 20 years you must be doing something wrong.
