Loaned my S1-IS to a friend of mine for his trip to England with the confidence that he'd take good care of it (but with the knowledge that he's a hard worker and would pay honestly if it went missing). Low and behold, he got off at Reading and the camera continued.
The S1-IS is mighty hard to find in any well known retail stores so I can't find an accurate price there and I'm never sure how far out (one way or the other) Ebay's prices are. If you know of any representative retail stores which are still carrying it, would you please let me know what it is going for (also note the currency you are using... Canadian here).
Thank you. |

Most prices seem to be in the $270-$299 USD range. Here is my source.
Edit:
B&H has it in stock for $254.95 USD.

Excellent, thanks. I'd much rather take $306 to him than the $690 I paid for it originally (that's a disgusting drop over 1 year...). |

Well the Powershot S2 has come out and Sony, Samsung among others companies that have release cameras with similar stats.

The S2 may well be worth it anyway: macro focus down to 0cm (that's what it says!) and the IS has a "panning" setting to make it even more useful. Downside is it uses different memory cards : ( |

I always look HERE first for prices. Bear in mind that the newer S2 IS has 5 megapixels, 12X zoom, less noise and much better low light focusing. |

I think the S2 is better as well; but take note that it is LARGER, and without looking at the exact measurements, it felt significantly larger in my hands at a store. Almost awkardly so.
On the other hand, I could immediately tell it focused much faster and was much quicker!

HERE'S a good comparison. |

The only problem that may arise is that the S2 uses Secure Digital (SD) memory cards (instead of CompactFlash), if you have tons of CF cards already. |

Still waiting to see if the camera shows up in the Lost and Found in Reading (UK). If it doesn't, then I will look in to what to replace it with.
All I was looking for here was the price which I should ask my buddy for if I were replacing 1:1 the S1IS. I would probably go for an S2 or, if I can budget it, move all the way up to a 350D or 20D but that can be decided later.
Thanks for the help though. I do agree that the S2 is a much better camera and no I would not actually be replacing this with an S1... just needed to know how much I ought to ask for from my friend. |

I remembered a bit more--the reason it struck me as awkwardly large was that they had made the grip REALLY "deep". It was almost difficult to hold. So try one before you buy one! (But I should point out that despite this, if I were rebuying, I'd still by the S2 over the S1. Or I'd consider the new Panasonic Lumix FZ30 that's coming out.)

I shoot the S2. I would guess it is unlikely that you had enough memory cards running around that would really make upgrading a pain.
I too have considered the Panasonic FZ30, but the pixels appear to be roughly the same size, if perhaps a little smaller. I've heard that it does show in noise.
Please remember that all any 12x zoom camera will be able to do is "replace" your S1. It won't really add anything to your shooting parameters.
If you wanted to make a step up, consider checking around for second hand 300D's. I saw one go the other day for around $600 CAD with kit lens in a local second hand shop. Add the russian Hack (free) and a 70-300 ($310 ish CAD) from Sigma and you're laughing at a cheaper price than the Panasonic FZ30 with basically the same usability but WAY less noise. It's no 350XT, but it's a really really good alternative to a big zoom P&S. The Bonus is that if you want to upgrade your body, you can do so with much less degradation of value too!
I will also assume there was a CF card in the S1? That might be a factor too. When I bought my first Digicam, my 1GB CF card cost 75% of what my camera did. I wonder if the same is true of your s1?
I hope things go OK with you in your friendship. It can be a little uncomfortable after this sort of thing happens.
I had this experience with a good friend of mine when I tried to teach her to drive standard in my Bug and the first thing she did was to forget to let the key turn back while starting it and burned out my starter motor. Things have always been a little uncomfortable between us since then.
I don't know which end of Canada you are in, but I have heard there are a ton of second hand photography stores in Vancouver, and major urban centers in Ontario as well as to a lesser extent Edmonton. I noticed you are using Shaw, so I am guessing you might be in BC?

Calgary boy here. I know there are a few second-hand camera stores around but I've yet to dig through their inventory yet (most seem focused on 35mm).
I would definitely go with the S2 if I end up just looking to replace the camera. I love the fairly long zoom of the S1 and to have that combined with a sensor with decent resolution would be nice. The $600 300d sounds like a good price and at least that would get me started on building up a glass collection.
Basic situation is that I can't afford the 20D + glass at the moment (DPC got me hooked on that quality) but I also know that I'd go absolutely mad without a digi through the school year for another 4 months of summer work so, if the camera doesn't turn up, I might have to look in to an S2 or something equivalent.
For the friend, not a problem. We're close and we agreed on the terms before he left. 90% of my friends would not have had my trust for this but this guy is good and it won't get weird. It'd get weird if I tried to con him in to buying me a brand new S2... but I figure $320 (cost of current S1) is a fair request along with the replacement costs of all the accessories I had with it (I love my "The Pod").
Thanks for your help, it is appreciated. |

Any S2 users note any improvement in the shutter-lag vs the S1? That's really the only thing I really have a problem with on the S1. |

I never really used the S1, but I took a whackload of action shots with my S2. Had to use manual focus (pain in the arse), but didn't have much of an issue with shutter lag. I always half-press. I try to think for a second before taking most shots as well. That second causes more lag than shutter-lag would, but also allows me to time the shot to what I'm used to already with the camera.
I doubt it is anywhere near as good as a DSLR. DPreview should have a timing chart in their full review of the S2.
To the OP: If you are really set on something pocketable, you might also have a look at the FZ20. I feel that the FZ30 is too much money for what could be had in a DSLR for the same money, but the FZ20 will be coming down in price a lot in the next month or two. You might be able to get some amazing deal there. The function of the camera is basically the same, but the big difference is the manual focus ring. If you use Manual focus much, (I use it on about 1/3rd of my shots) you will be G-L-A-D of it.
Check out second hand stores, put a wanted ad in the local free classifieds or whatever you have available and do your homework. You might even pick up a 300d for less than 600 if you get lucky.
Also keep your eyes open for a 50mm f1.8 at the same time. No point and shoot can really do anything close to what the 300D with a 50mm 1.8 can. It's around 100 bucks CAD.
The 300D ISN'T as good as a 20D, but is HUGE leaps and bounds closer than any P&S.
See if you can check out the Vancouver classifieds as well. You might be able to make a cheap phone call to a store in Vancouver and ask them for advice or some email addresses. That second hand market is apparently pretty hot for both bodies and lenses.

Has anyone used both the S1/S2-IS and the FZ20/30 and can offer a nice and descriptive comparison. The panasonics are looking very tempting, just a matter of whether I want to spend the extra $300 for the FZ30 as I'm not sure what it's biggest differences are over the FZ20.
Thanks. |
