Here's what I shot:
Here's what I was thinking when I shot this:
I wanted to show the obvious-ness of some destinations - thinking that for some, based on what we are, the destination is sort of predefined. So I realized as I plugged in a computer there was only one destination for a three-pronged plug -
Then I thought some more. I just got a car that I always wanted, worked hard to get to my destination, but due to life circumstances right now, it is an empty, in fact bitter, place to be. I'll be trading it in on something else this week.
So some destinations that we work so hard to get to actually mean nothing once we are there - hence the plug socket that is suspended with no power - it's an empty ambition.
Comments on how I could have portrayed these thoughts through better setup, better subject, better photographic techniques are certainly welcome!

Doug,
I went the same way you did. And I agree with eschelar's comments - sometimes, if people have to think to hard, they don't bother. I'm not saying that is wrong; its just something to keep in mind when reviewing challenge results. Personally, I liked your image. I thought it was well done and made a great point. But, in a challenge called "destinations" it seems people wanted a pretty place to go.
Your image means something to you. And it means something to others. I wouldn't worry about mass appeal as not every image is liked by every person who views it. Keep working on stuff that means something to you and you will be infinitely happier in the end. You might not get rich and you might not get a ribbon but, from your image, I would say maybe they aren't really that important.

You should've titled it:
"I wanted to show the obvious-ness of some destinations - thinking that for some, based on what we are, the destination is sort of predefined. So I realized as I plugged in a computer there was only one destination for a three-pronged plug.
Then I would've gotten it. ;-)
Seriously, now that you explain it, it seems like a good concept. Best wishes and better things ahead, I'm sure. |

I got a message from a friend indicating that I WAY overthought this, and it's very hard to communicate all of that in one photo - ok, I can handle that - I appreciate the kind words
Ken, you made me laugh right out loud! Daughter thinks I'm weirder than she used to now, but you so funny!
Thanks for your input too Dahkota, I'm proud of the resulting image, but I DO want to be RICH RICH RICH and have RIBBONS too! (like heida, she's LOADED!) :-)
Thanks again.

Personally I thought it was a great shot and gave you a 9. When I first saw it I thought, what a wonderful and refreshing change.

I love this image but remember most voters don't spend long looking at each image. Your photo doesn't scream destination (the winning image did but most others didn't either) This could have been remedied with a suitable title. Instead the title you chose was even more cryptic than the picture, I certainly wouldn't have understood the title without your explanation.
Compare this with the second to eighth place getters, they all have titles that help link the image to the theme...
I didn't manage to vote in this competetion but would have given you a high score, but understand how some voters would class your image as not that relevant to the theme and this will cost you points. |

excellent point Leok, any suggestions on a title that would have done better?

Well i must say.. when i look at photoes and vote.. sometimes i find myself wondering what the hell this photographer ment..
i like it very much acctually... and i think if there was an option to see the phtographer comment about a shot.. it could lead to an amazing places inside photographers mind.. as in your case..
dont worry if people didnt get you.. just rely on yourself in this case..
i must admit that "getting to your head" in this shot is very hard..
but remember that when you vote for other people that you didnt get what they tried to achive..
