this is my first post, and i am not accustom to dpchallenge ettique, but i need advice on what i should do.

I am thinking of picking up a 20d (upgrading from a 300d), but am having second thoughts because with canon releasing the 5d soon, are they going to replace the 20d? I am pretty set on getting the 20d, i am amazed by the features. I just dont want to buy it and then the next day canon annouce the 20d replacement. I would consider the 5d if it wasnt the price and the fact that i already invested in ef-s lenses. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Wow, seems like a lot of folks are changing from the 300d to the 20D.

You might want to buy the body only at this point.

Consider looking around for the 20D. You may be able to find a lower price than B&H. If you are into shooting sports and want more buffer, then the 20D might be a good idea.

I'm not sure if the 17-85IS lens is a good lens for sports. I was thinking about something in the 200-300 range. If you want a fast lens, my dream lens would be a Sigma 120-300 EX f/2.8, but that a $2000 lens.
If you are looking for a cheaper lens, then I'd suggest the Sigma APO DG 70-300. Bigma is always nice too.

The reason i am looking at the 17-85 is because i am going to be shooting basketball, and a long lens such as the one you mentioned will not really help me too much. Plus if i get the 17-85, it would replace the 18-55.

Ah, I see, you may want to consider a faster lens as the 17-85 is a slow lens and the IS won't help you if the subjects are moving. You'll just get background stuff without shake and the players will be blurred b/c they will be moving.

what kind of lens do you recommend?

There isn't a fast (f2.8 or lower) lens with the range you have in mind.
Caon 16-35 f2.8L is nice and fast but over $1000. Tamron 17-35 if f2.8-4.5, but is 2.8 at the 17mm end. If you want more midrange, Canon 24-70 f2.8L is fast but once again over $1000. Both Tamron and Sigma make s nice lenses, 28-75 f2.8 (Tamron), 24-60 EX f2.8 (Sigma).

Canon make a 50mm in f1.8 and 1.4, Sigma makes a bunch of fast f1.8 primes in 20, 24, 28, and 30 in f1.4.

It really depends on the focal lenght range you are looking at.
