I just ordered a Rebel XT with the 18-55mm kit lens, and also ordered the 50mm f/1.8 II from B&H. I am curious as to how these two lenses will compare to each other. First of all, do most of you shoot the 50mm wide open at 1.8 in low light conditions, or is it not very sharp wide open?

Also, I am going to a high school football homecoming game, and I would like to get some photos of the people on the field during the homecoming show at halftime. They'll be about 20 yards away, at night, typical football lighting conditions. I know what I have isn't the best lens to take these shots, but what kind of settings would you use to get the best out of what I have. And which lens will be better for this situation?

Thanks, and sorry for the long post!

the 50 will be better because it's faster and you'd probably be using the long end of the 18-55 anyways. i dont have the 18-55 but i have a 50 1.8. it's a bit soft wide open. but it'll improve if you stop it down slightly

as for the settings. i've never shot in that kind of environment but i would probably shoot at around f/2.2 at iso 400 or 800 maybe?

I have a question about the 50mm 1.8:

Whenever I set it to anything BUT wide open to 1.8, my Nikon D70 won't allow me to take the picture...I thought because of the lighting, I HAD to shoot it like that...
