i really feel sorry for you people that don't calibrate your monitors... your really missing out on some great photos that you think are way too dark....

Just bumped this thread because I was worried about my monitor. New lcd seems to print almost perfectly with my printer, but images on screen doesn't look so hot.

All this talk of calibrating monitors when I really came here to see what people are doing to calibrate their computers.

I'm on a calibrated monitor right now in the newsroom...you know what's weird..I find editing the photos easier on an uncalibrated monitor because the difference between preview and no preview is easier to distinguish.
but I know my images (or whoever's images) im editing will look in print just as they do on the screen which is most important.

I really feel sorry for people that don't calibrate their computers. But I'd have to disagree on the monitor side of things. To truly calibrate your monitor you need hardware, which costs money, which a lot of us don't have. For what I do, which is take photos to show to family/friends online, it would hurt to have a calibrated monitor. I don't print photos very often, and how I see the images on my uncalibrated monitor is just how all my friends/family will see the image on their uncalibrated monitor. To each his own. To calibrate, or not to calibrate... I don't care.

Not true. If your monitor is miscalibrated on the dark side, and your friends/family's monitors are miscalibrated on the bright side, then you won't see photos the same way. They could look quite different.

So if my monitor is perfectly calibrated, then everyone who has uncalibrated will see the photos differently than I do. And if I have an uncalibrated monitor, half the people who see my photos will see it close to the same as me, and the other half will see farther away than if I calibrated. I'll just have to quit posting photos and carry my laptop wherever I go.

It really can make a huge difference. I recently bought ColorPlus, monitor calibration software (comes with needed hardware), and it has really helped in getting my images to look the way they should. Not that this makes my photos any better (composition, technique, etc...)! ;^)

Many comments I've had in the past on challenge entries now make so much sense, where before I didn't get it because I couldn't see what the commenter(s) was seeing. For sure worth the $72 I spent on it.

A monitor calibration is something I will definately consider in the future. But I don't feel I should be pitied because I don't have $72 to spend on it. If I had $72 it would go to buy a 50mm 1.8 to go along with my kit lens.

No pity coming from me. Entirely your choice.

Alright.....I've calbrated my monitor and guess what? I think its my attitude that needs calibration. Hmmmmm........maybe a good glass of wine should take care of that. I think I'll try that. ;-)

Yeah, sorry for the whining. There's no argument that for 99.9% of all people it's better to have a calibrated monitor. I just found the above statement a bit bold. But they aren't around to defend themselves so I thought I'd whine freely to everyone else.
