Today I decided to play with shooting in RAW mode and get a feel for that. but, since I had never done it, I thought I'd play it safe and shoot in RAW+JPG mode.

However, when I connect the camera to my computer with the USB cable, there are duplicate filenames, both ending in .jpg. They are slightly different sizes, but not as big as I expected.

So, I just did a couple of test shots. One with RAW only which produced a .CR2 file, and another with RAW+JPG and ended up with two .jpg files again.

Firmware is v1.0.2, running WinXP-SP2+all patches.

Any ideas what I may be doing wrong?

Thanks!

the raw file will save an unaltered file (no in camera color adjustment, when you use photoshop this file will open with the ability to change the kelvin temp of the light) when you shoot raw and jpeg you will aquire two different images one should be slightly different than the other, no difference in the dimentions of the image.

The raw file really just gives you an unmasked file from the camera with noe in camera alterations. I dont think that you are doing anthing wrong, you just may not have the correct software for the job. Raw files are usually used by professionals to allow the adjustments to be done out of camera.

But, what I don't get, is both files (using camera as a removable drive) are showing as .jpg (in windows explorer). If I run RAW only (not RAW+JPG), I get the expected .CR2 file.

You're correct, you should have a .CR2 file and a .JPG file; it's possible that the issue is the fact that you're using the cam-to-computer connecton. Try removing the card from the cam and using a card reader, the files should be there.

Ditto what kirbic said. When I plug my camera directly into the computer with RAW+JPEG files the RAW files don't show up at all. If I put the card into a reader they're all there.

Thanks guys! That was it. I don't know why they were showing up as 2 jpg's, or why when I shot only in RAW the .CR2 file showed up, but at least I know the work-around. :-)

Thanks again!

Similar ditto: my old download software doesn't even show the CR2 files, it shows them as JPG with a big question mark. If you install the program on your Rebel's EOS Solution disc you can view 'em with that, and RAW edit them very intuitively as well.
