Ok you all did such a great job in this thread I was wondering what you can do with this.

This photo is of my other daughter Joyah and it is taken at the same time as the other photo. I had only just got the camera and taking photos of everything that moved!
I really like this photo but in the benefit of hindsight and in everything thing I have learnt from this site I can see it has some issues! Is it salvagable?
I have even learnt a little bit more about photo processing since last time. LOL I even figured out USM is unsharp mask! So I am ready and waiting to learn from all you good folk. Thanks in advance.

I'll try my hand at it.

cropped just a bit from the left side, used the lasso tool to mask her from the background, blurred and darkened the background, lightened her face and eyes then muted the colors.

Thanks guys. Anyone else willing to have a go?

I'll try. :0)

Can't promise anything great.

Went the B&W route:

Besides basics in B&W conversion, I painted out background elements, dodged some on her face and burned in outer portions, slightly cropped off some of the left side, and of course framed one version just for it's presentation effect.
The pose and lighting on this image was superb - just had to polish the diamond in the rough.

my go at it.

Okay, here's mine. Little more subtle than most others...

I cloned in some hair on the left where the washed out highlight was, dodged her face, cloned out the birght spot in the right bottom, cloned out the peole behind her head and smudged it, sponged/saturated her hair on the top and some on the sides, and saturated her lips to make them a little pinker, dodged some of the circles from under her eyes.

I think there was some other stuff, but I wasn't sriting it down. :0)

Hope you like it. Tried to explain enough for you to do it yourself too.

I was able to remove the highlight on her cheek without making it too un-natural finally, so I decided to post that too.

edit - Oh, and I desaturated her ear so it's not so bright, but kept definition.

Looks like totally removing the background does the job :D
Thanks EVERYONE I have learnt something from each of your versions.

Anyone care to tell me how the background was removed?

After the B&W conversion, I selected the paintbrush tool, soft edge brush, normal mode, 50% opacity, 100% flow, used the eyedropper to select a neighboring color (or could use black in the color palette) and slowly painted over the areas I wanted to hide. Vary the size of the brush pixels as needed, zooming in on the image and going smaller as you get closer to edges not wanted to be covered up.

Thanks!
I think moodville waited until I figured out the crop and all and stole my idea.

Eh actually I wish some of her talent would rub off on me.
I'm still a novice - she's a pro.

Once I figured out the crop and what where I was headed with it, maybe 5 minutes.
