Are you allowed to respond to comments received on challenge submissions before the voting is over?

You'll probably get a variety of responses, but as far as I know (unless its changed lately) its sort of generally considered "bad manners" (for lack of a better term), because the annonymoty is lost. But there's no hard, fast rule against it. Just be careful of tone, or the next thread started will be "Somebody responded to my comment and hurt my feelings, how dare they!"

You can PM them if you find something inapropriate in their comment, or to answer a question that you think is essential to answer before voting closes, But it is highly dicouraged. the anonimity of submissions is destroyed by sending a message that refers to a particular entry and that messes up the voting. Furthermore if the response to the comment is critical of their comment, it can serve to dicourage further comments. I have done it a few times, asking for a modification to comments that refer to a model's looks, since she was going to be reading the comments, but I would never try to argue a person out of their initial reaction to a shot of mine. |

I didn't want to respond to a comment because I didn't like what was said. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion and I leave it at that. Liked or disliked.
In the perspective challenge there where some questions asked in the comments and I wasn't sure if it was appropiate to answer them before the challenge was over.

I figure if you want to respond, you can and will. If not, you will wontt. No different than commenting when you vote. Most should but don't. Its your membership after all isn't it? |

People who definitely don't want comments during the voting can exercise their option for their comments to remain anonymous during the voting period. Personally, I only answer (during voting) if the person asks a direct question and seems to want a response.
Otherwise, I respond to any comments in the photo's discussion thread when the voting's over -- at that point it works just like the forums, so you can quote the comment you're resonding to. Then I'll just send a "thanks-you" PM and noting that I've added my own comments on the photo.
That way, everyone has the chance to benefit from the "discussion" instead of it becoming a private argument via PM ... |

I received a response to a comment I made on a photo (I have no idea what photo it was though). Apparently my comment was that it did not fit the theme. The person responded that they never heard of the rule of thirds and just placed the subject where they thought it would look good.
If you don't know what the rule of thirds is, should you really be entering the contest? I just found that odd. |
