How do you know if your monitor is calibrated in the right way? Are there any sofware test packages available? Thanks!

Adobe Gamma is said to be pretty basic, but gets you close.
I recently used a Spyder 2 system, and my monitors weren't far off.

Monitor Calibration as easy as it gets -- not as dead-on accurate as a hardware solution, but will get more than close enough for most viewing purposes.

ColorPlus by Pantone (same people who make Spyder 2). Software with Hardware (monitor sensor). $72-$99 USD. Pretty sure it's www.pantone.com. Bought mine at www.buy.com.

So tempted to buy. Any opinions from current users?

I ordered the ColorPlus system to calibrate my monitor but it's on back order from Camera Canada. From what I've read at //www.photographyblog.com/reviews_colorplus.php you need control of your contrast to calibrate with that system. With the Dell 2005FPW, while in digital mode, you have no control over the contrast, it is essentially locked. However in analog it isn't. To further confuse the issue, I read somewhere (can't remember where) that what is called contrast on a CRT monitor is called brightness on a LCD monitor and CRT brightness is equivalent to LCD contrast. Has anyone had issues like this while using a similar spyder and monitor combinations?

I have the colorvision spyder pro, and you have to have control of your monitor contrast and brightness. There are also options to allow you to use rgb corrections if you have control of that on your monitors as well...
