OK - so I have little experience doing portraits and my 4.632 score and 237 / 285 finish (lowest on both counts) shows it. Since I did not have a model I chose a candid shot I took at a wedding reception. Decdied to go for something different, an angelic look, but fell flat. The first is the a full color version and the second is the one I entered. Should I have gone with the straight shot without the "art" attempt? If so do you really think it would have scored higher. Or are they both crap?

Well, while a nice candid, neither really come off as a portrait type shot to me personally. The one you did enter appears washed out and faded.
The original, while the color is much better has a few issues for me, again, this is all my personal opinion.
First his eyes are closed and the lower lip being pulled in. In the thumbnail he almost looks asleep and when you pull up the full shot you can see his eyes are barely open so possibly he's awake? The lower lip is still a problem, the way it's set he looks uncomfortable and in your description you said he thought he was being cute? That's not how it came across in the shot. It's not a bad shot overall, the color in the original is nice and probably would have done better just on that aspect. But the overall shot, while mom will probably love it doesn't do much for me when I look at it. Sorry.

I played around with it some, hope you dont mind.
As I said in my original comment the main issue with the image was the lack of blacks and contrast. Using the white and black points in curves would fix the white background and give it some darker tones in the eyelashes. I also used a screen blending layer with an opacity change to get more of the high-key look. It's a little extreme but that was a quick edit on the 640px image but you get the general idea. |

Wow! It pays to know waht your doing. I should be able to get a pretty good result using the full size origianl. I'll have to play around.
Thanks. |
