Conspiracy theories notwithstanding, Langdon says DPC was being indexed by Google and MSN at the same time and an issue with the image table was bogging down the site. A fix should be in place shortly if he hasn't already done so. |

OK, I think I stand corrected. I've been doing a ping test for the last five minutes and responses are good, while navigating the site sucks on & off. So now I don't know what to blame. I guess there's a bit of code you can add to ask Google & MSN not to index. The Google forum search sucks, and bearmusic is a better resource than Google anyway.
If I tried to vote with slowness like this I'd end up giving all 1's out of annoyance.

Maybe I spoke too soon. After 10 minutes of ping test I'm getting lots of packet loss from DPC and the two preceding hops. I'll let the data accumulate for a while and post up a graph later.

Update: Now the slowdown is due to Strikeslip's barrage of ping tests. :-P |

LOL Shannon...
OK, here's a graph to puzzle over. Look at how regular the pl intervals are. That just screams router to me. What other possibilities are there? I have to admit, the pl isn't this regular for the entire graph, I took this interval in particular to make my point about its regularity.

Haha... that's still as funny now as it was back then (See my profile).
We've been in the process of migrating the database to InnoDB (which will result in less locking). Unfortunately some of the site still uses full-text search (which InnoDB doesn't support), so it was a toss-up between losing search and the site being slow. Image search just got ditched, so let's see how it goes. |

OK, maybe it's me this time but I've tried to vote and comment on two images and both seemed VERY slow. Are things still slow for you other guys or is it me?

LOL! I'm glad you can laugh when a$$hats who haven't got a clue throw in their stupid opinions. I just can't help myself, though, ask my wife! ;-) I took a look at sargasso.net this morning when I starting pinging DPC & saw the packet loss (20%) starting at the first sargasso router. Maybe you should watch out when you roll your desk chair back & forth, that's the DPC cable under there! :-P
Thanks for the work you do!

There are three reasons to take any traceroute or ping like this with a grain of salt and in context - 1) icmp packets are typically given low priority under congestion, 2) packets that must be handled by a router's cpu are far slower than packets that are simply switched, and most importantly in this case 3) packets are often routed asymmetrically. In your case although the outbound packets go via isprime, the return path (starting at gtdn.net) goes via uunet.
Anyway, the current slowness at dpc is due to cpu/disk load rather than routing. (We're still optimising, and unfortunately this will make it even slower until we're done). |

I vote for a bigger CPU and faster disks as well as optimising! Go big or go home! ;-)

I heard somebody on DPC Fanatics...I think it was Scalvert...say that it could be that Forum Searching was turned back on, and this same kind of thing happened last time it was on. I don't really know, but thats what I heard, and I enjoy spreading rumors :)
