I posted a picture here a while back of a bright orange mushroom with a desaturated background. The original I posted was too dark for most peoples tastes so I took the original out-of-camera file and started from scratch in PS. This is my result.
Comments or critiques pls? |

Can you post the original version (the one you showed us first) alongside, and perhaps the unedited version as well? I'd be real interested in seeing what you had to work with and what decisions you made.

Thanx. The new version is an improvement on the originally-posted version for sure. I believe there's an even better version lurking. I'll take a shot at it later if you like, assuming nobody beats me to it :-)

How about this one.
I burned all around the shroom, then dodged the left edge of the stem a bit, and messed with the levels and saturation a little. Slight USM.
First attempt at full picture dodge/burn so be gentle with me :0)

I think you did a great job on the original, but I think the high contrast and selective desat is what makes this look cool (to me), kind of a digital darkroom type photo. Maybe if you desaturated and sharpened everything but the cap it would be even better. I'm gonna give it another try too. |

Call me a naturalist :0)
I like to desat/sat selectively in the sponge brushes. I think the bits of sky make it kind of interesting.
I forgot to say, but I was just presenting a different option besides de-sat.

Okay, here's a sslightly different take on it. I realize that you're focusing on a much more extreme contrast, but for me that's a mistake, so I am not going that far. The BG IS desatted, however; I agree with that.
For what it's worth :-)

I really like it, you did a good job making the mushroom really stand out like I was doing but the background looks nicer than in mine. I'm about finished another version of it with alot more contrast which I'll post here in a minute. Maybe it's too much... call it post-modern art =D |

Ok, so I wasn't almost done. It took tons of dodge/burn/sponge tool/clone stamp/patch tool (and more non-spot editing) to get it to this point. It's perfect for me now so I'd be interested in hearing what other people have to say. =]
Edit: Not quite perfect. I have to use dodge on the fungus growing on the fungus (the grey stuff on the cap) to make it white again, and theres a yellow spot and a red spot I want to remove. But close.
Edit: There, That's the stuff. All done. Complete. Fin. Finito. Accomplished.

If that's the way you want it, then that's the way it should be :-) IMO the dramatic BG contrast works against the image, but that's just my take on it. Cool shot regardless, thanks for letting us play.
