Okay, here's the deal. My mom sent me a $20 gift card for Walmart for my birthday. THANKS MOM! The catch was, "You have to spend it on something for yourself!"

HA!

I told Ellie what Grandma had said and she started laughing too. I told Melissa what Grandma said and she said, "This is the same grandma who used to have to take you by the hand, lead you in the store, force clothing or other items into your hand and tell you to BUY THEM!?"

"Yep, one in the same."

She also started laughing.

In case you haven't figured it out, I'm horrible about buying stuff for myself. I just don't do it. I won't pay full price for clothes, only buy clearance and thrift store. I don't have any needs that aren't already taken care of and the things I do want are usually super expensive (what can I say, caviar taste on a hot dog budget).

After the girls got done laughing at me they said they would help me spend the $20.

"But it has to be stuff for me! Not you!" I reminded them.

"No problem mom, we can find something!" they replied.

So off to Walmart we went. Looked at clothes, one shirt caught my eye but even on sale it was $11! For a shirt! That I would only be able to wear about another couple of weeks before it would have to go into storage for the winter.

See, I also have this habit of talking myself out of stuff before I even try it on. It's a habit of mine.

So I went to look at software, maybe a cheapo desktop publishing program to write the newsletters on and such. AHA! There's one, only $9.96 plus tax! I can handle that. So I picked that up.

Well, it's getting late and we have to go but I just remembered we need cat food so I grab that and pay for all of it with the gift card, leaving me about $2.

Get home, try out the new software and it won't work. Take it out of the CD/DVD drive and it's all scratched up! Put in a different CD to make sure it's not my computer, nope, it works fine. So I call Walmart, let them know the problem and am told to bring it back the next morning for an exchange.

I go back the next morning, drop off the defective CD and go to get a replacement. They don't have one. Well, they do but it's in a box and costs $10 more! I don't want to pay an extra $10 for a book I won't read so I pass on the software, get the credit back on the card and figured I would find something else. I still have the full $20 because I wasn't going to count the cat food as part of my birthday present. Yeah, I know, mean me.

Then I thought, "I need a new printer." My Epson finally died, the HP one I have is sucking up ink like a sponge and I do a lot of printing for the Elmira Heights Merchants Association, so I go look at printer. Ohhhhhhhhh, I like this one, printer, copier, scanner, I can sell my other scanner and have it all in one and it's only $60! NOT BAD!

Oh wait, they don't have it in stock, darn!

So I get a cheapie Lexmark for $30 and a set of replacement cartridges thinking the EHMA would reimburse me for the ink and I would have my birthday present, THANK YOU MOM!

I go to turn in the receipt and what does the treasurer do? Even after I explained I really needed a new printer anyway so just reimburse me for the ink? Yep, reimbursed me for the printer as well, "For all the work you've put in and you'll be using it mostly for EHMA, right?"

*sigh*

I have never had a harder time spending 20 freaking dollars in my life!

So my next attempt will be to hit the Salvation Army on Tuesday (half price day) and restock my winter clothes, don't have that many sweaters for this upcoming winter.

And if that doesn't work I don't know what I WILL DO!!!!!

P.S.

Oh and my mom just emailed me back :

Picture of Jerry (the mouse) doubled over laughing and all she wrote was LMFAO!!

My mom is evil, she knew how hard this would be for me. I told her so too, and told her I was going to go get a tatto that said "MY MOM IS EVIL"

Know what she wrote back?

DARE YA!

Buy a cool kitchen gadget; LOTS of those can be had for 20 bucks or less. You DO cook, right? Have you got one of those new high-temperature-resistant silcone spatulas? They are terrific. You can oder one of those and a microplane and still be within your 20-dollar budget. The microplane is absolutely fantastic; you'll never use pre-ground nutmeg again when you try whole nutmeg shaved witht he microplane.

Moi? COOK?!?! BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Oh my! Okay, yes, I cook but nothing fancy, I have three picky kids and my husband really does most of the cooking when he's not working ;)

I'm not a real big girly girl either, I don't do my nails, I don't do bubble baths (prefer short showers), I rarely get my hair done (usually trim my own bangs) and own one dress that I wear for most occasions (I wore my wedding dress 5 times before handing it over to the kids for a costume, wasn't your traditional type, ya know?)

I have enough cards for my camera right now and enough batteries. The next step would be a seperate flash unit but I can't get that for $20, that's for sure, plus I will buy that with business money so it can be written off.

Frames are nice, but again, I won't pay a lot of money for one, most of my stuff is mounted on boards without a frame.

My mother knew exactly how hard this would be for me, she is pure evil I'm tellin' ya! Wanna see a picture of her?

Happy belated birthday, btw!

And, if you need some lessons on being more hedonistic, please do drop me a line... it's one of my special skills! :o)

I don't seem to have any problem spending $20 - not even on myself. Yesterday was my birthday - hubby bought me a new hunting rifle (well, a used one for $200 less than a new one of the same model). So, the rifle was under $200 - but, I needed ammo, a rifle sling, the swivels for the sling to attach to, ahh yes - ands a couple sticks of the yummy elk jerky that was in a cannister at the register....oh, and there was a great little GPS for only $199 !!! No, we're not rich - but I did have an extra $800 this pay period as I switched jobs and got money for un-used vacation time and sick time, plus three days at the new job that I worked during my last 2 weeks at the old job.

Have fun spending the $20 - there are a ton of things you can get for that!

My problem is spending ONLY $20. Let's see...

The filter, frame and NiMH batteries are all good ideas. You might be able to find a decent camera bag or even a reflector at WalMart (poster board is useful, too). They sell black and white denim fabric that's great for backdrops. You can work wonders with a clamp-on work light and 100w daylight bulb. Happy shopping!
