So, got my Rebel XT, bought a used Tamron 28-200mm 3.8-5.6 to save some cash.

My question is, why does my camera's aperture setting stop at 4.0 when the Tamron lens supposedly opens to 3.8?

My initial guess is that there are a fixed number of f stops (2.8, 3.5, 4, 4.5, etc). What happens with 2 and 1.8 lenses?

3.8 should be the widest you can go if the lens is set to 28.

The widest would be 5.6 if the lens is set to 200.

What was the focal length when the lens wouldn't go wider than 4.0?

the 3.8-5.6 indicates that the limit of the aperture is different on each end of the zoom. If you are zoomed too much, then you may not get down to the 3.8.

Don't worry, on a 50mm f1.8 you can go down to 1.8. There isn't a limitation with the camera body.

When I have the lens open all the way to 28mm, it still stops at 4.0. Really bizarre, I thought. Even on Av mode, I can't force the aperture lower.

Does it actually say 3.8 - 5.6 on the lens?

Yes it does.

Wanger, if you got a 350xt, time to change the cam on your profile... As to the f/4.0 problem, it's possible that if the lens is a few years old it's a "chipping" issue; the 350xt may not be communicating completely with the lens (or vice versa, actually). It's common to have to rechip third-party lenses to newer models of cameras. probably not worth it for the difference between 3.8 and 4.0...

Of course, I could be way off base on this, just a theory.
