Maybe all that was needed was reversing the setup and have the entire scene lit from the other direction, slightly outlining the face. In this, I think some of the outtakes were more successful. |
Interesting suggestion.
Lighting is definately my weakest link. I didn't like how dark the face was in the submission - darn those basic rules - and i have since purcahsed a second light to even it up a bit. In the outakes i was able to doge on the face a little to lighten it up.

Mesmeraj, I'm curious, what score do you think this photo should have received? Where do you think it should have placed? Do you you think it's better then the photos that ranked above it?

Maybe you should open your mind a little too. Maybe some people just don't like it and still have lifes that are not "mundane." Your opinion is not the only right opinion.

I think my score is fine - its people not leaving feedback when they give a 1 that is my problem.
See that big smile and the wink it means its a joke.

Don't get me wrong here..but I really don't see why it is so special..I guess I don't understand why you would put tree branches in your shirt. :-) It is a kewl shot, just doesn't have that "WOW" to me. Subject is almost to small and the ligthing isn't right on.
If it were my shot I would work on the lighting more to get the mood just right, but that's me. :-)) |

The reason a lot of people don't leave feedback when voting low is because people call them closed minded and claim they have a mundane life when they do :)

My favorite time is right before the challenge when hope is boundless for my entry. Will I score high? will I break a 6? Could I ribbon????? sure my expectations a ruined by 12:15 but I still keep plugging. Its my ideas that i've become less sensitive about with each challenge I enter. Do I believe the scores I get are too low? Of course I do at first but then I realize its the masses whom I'm asking to vote on my photo and everyone has diffrent tastes. Almost always the commenters are right on and I appreciate all of them even if I sulk a little after reading some of them. I don't agree with the finishing of many photos in the comp here but... When two businessmen always agree, only one is needed. With all due respect many great photos get ones, twos and threes here. I only give tens to photos that are great and more importantly make a personal connection with me. In this perspective, I have to accept all scores, good and bad. Oh and about the photo by mesmeraj, I thought it was one of the more original photos, well executed and gave it an 8...

My thought exactly....and I gave this image an 8 as well....I liked it....it was almost too dark (too dark for my computer at work but I'm able to see it well enough at home).
I like stuff outside the box...but attitude sucks :/

i kind of agree with colyla, mesmeraj. unfortunately, on the interweb, sarcasm isn't easy to pull off. some of your comments in this thread leave a bit of a sour taste in people's mouths because we know:
a) you're kidding
b) that there is a shred of your own perceived truth in your comments
probable best way for this thread to die is to thank people for their comments and let it fade away. going forward, probably apply a little less sarcasm to ensure that a majority of people can understand where you're coming from.
rgds,
d.
if you need some examples:
instead of:
GAWD! lighten up people it was a JOKE
See the smiley??
whatever.
I would have probably left the "whatever" out. It completely negates your attempt to sway peoples' opinion and makes them feel like they were right to be wrong about you in the first place.
just some advice in an effort to help people play nicer w/each other. |

I am sick of these whiny self-obsessed PATHETIC threads.
Is all you people have to talk about how great your unwavering vision is, and why everyone who doesn't share it is a raging moron? A four isn't even a bad score, it's slightly below average. This image was lucky not to get more of them imo.
Sorry for being so aggressive, but i can't understand people like this. If you're so obsessed with justifying your point of view and only take negative comments and votes as something to argue about, then why are you submitting your image for voting and opening it up to other opinions anyway? Just so you have something to argue with on your crusade to prove how awesome your shot was??

IMO it has the potential of being a powerful photo. It is a good example of why self-assessment and the skills that allow this to happen in a positive constructive manner are so very important. I think you have the subjective part covered, now through good technical and artistic analysis you can create an excellent photograph. If you wish...........

Well, I guess your image wasn't that different!!!!! Your average vote was well above 5. As rex mentioned, you finished in the top quartile!!! All that points to DPC actally liking your image. Therefore, the image isn't different. |
Logic error.
The original statement is that "If DPC hates it you know its different." The statement that you used to prove that the image isn't different was not the original statement but the converse of that statement: "If its different then DPC hates it."
Though converses can be true, they can also be false, so you can't just assume the converse to be true. Example: "If it is raining, then I am be sad". The converse would be "If am sad, then it is raining." While it may be metaphorically raining, it is obvious that the converse is false; just because you are sad doesn't mean it rains. Therefore your conclusion is invalid.
Anyways...
EDIT: Adding a smiley face. I just got bored and couldn't resist =D

Not so.... what the author was advocating is that when one considers all of the data... the correlation to be made is that indeed "DPC did NOT hate the image, but rather that it was viewed in a rather favorable light.
Hence, it could not and did not fit the category and could therefore not be viewed as being hated nor different.
Ray :O)

I gave your image a 4 and left no comments.
When I read your comments post voting on your image I find you imply I have a close mind and that my life is mundane. All of that without you knowing anything more than what vote I may have given your image. That sure does not make me what to give you any comments. Besides if that is what you think of me I am convinced you are not at all interested in my thoughts. So I won't spoil your day. |

i think this is an unfair attack. if you're sick of these types of threads, please use the Hide Thread feature located at the top of the page and move on.
i don't see how being flat-out mean is going to get your point across in this or any other community. |

Sorry, i was rather grumpy. The idea is, i'm sick of them so i'm taking the preaching back to the preachers, as it were :P I don't see how i was flat-out mean, except perhaps use of the word "pathetic" may have been unwarranted. The start of this thread is indeed whiny, and it is indeed self-obsessed - these are observations, not judgements.
However, you were kind enough to not quote the part where i got to the point, so my point must indeed have failed to get across. Let me hence restate it more clearly:
I am frustrated by the creation of yet another thread by someone who put their image up for voting, then decided she didn't want the votes she got. She complained about lack of comments, but she opened it up to comments, and then decided she would rather insult the commenters than take on board their suggestions. Now she started a thread to ask for opinions on this, and isn't liking the opinions she gets. I realise i could just ignore the thread, but i feel i could better work off my frustration by explaining what frustrates me. Besides, i see this sort of bash-the-voters trend as a gradual deterioration in this community, which i would like to help prevent.
