What's the quickest method of pulling color from a photo and go B&W in PS?

Quick - Gradient Map, desaturation
Best - Channel Mixer

There's lots of different ways. Very quickly, you can use a hue/saturation adj. layer, and slide the sat. down. Or you can use a channel mixer layer and click the monochrome box and then adjust your individual channels to get the tone you want. Personally, I like going under image/mode/grayscale, then do a duo or tri tone.

Quickest? Image/mode/grayscale. One click and it's done.

Don't forget

Image>Adjustments>Desaturate

I use that a lot. Don't know how it compares to the others ways, though.

You can also look at the color channels separately. I've often found that the Green Channel (sometimes the Red Channel) can be copied and pasted into a new grayscale document as an effective starting point.

The Blue Channel is usually full of noise, so you can use that if you want a grainy look without using any filters.

I don't unerstand. Why is Channel Mixer best? What advantages does using Channel Mixer have over desaturating the seperate channels using Hue/Saturation?
