Quickest or best? They are not the same.
Quick - Gradient Map, desaturation
Best - Channel Mixer

There's lots of different ways. Very quickly, you can use a hue/saturation adj. layer, and slide the sat. down. Or you can use a channel mixer layer and click the monochrome box and then adjust your individual channels to get the tone you want. Personally, I like going under image/mode/grayscale, then do a duo or tri tone.

Quickest? Image/mode/grayscale. One click and it's done.

Don't forget
Image>Adjustments>Desaturate
I use that a lot. Don't know how it compares to the others ways, though. |

You can also look at the color channels separately. I've often found that the Green Channel (sometimes the Red Channel) can be copied and pasted into a new grayscale document as an effective starting point.
The Blue Channel is usually full of noise, so you can use that if you want a grainy look without using any filters. |

I don't unerstand. Why is Channel Mixer best? What advantages does using Channel Mixer have over desaturating the seperate channels using Hue/Saturation?
