agreed. which is why i commented on that aspect of the picture. it worked where it was. as for "dead space" you can see by the two i've submitted already that i'm playing with that idea, but i can see why most people would be against it.

I get frustrated around here mainly because I get instruction at school.. my professors taught me what I know about photography (mostly) and I learned to deal with my own style and how to compose an image.. I come here and you (in general) dont like what my professors do... and you like things my professors dont. Normally I do things the way I learned at school because I know it works. Not saying there's anything wrong with here though.. Oh and what I submit to challenges is by far not the best stuff I have... I like to do this for my own pleasure. |
i don't get what people like here. every week, i see amazing pictures place very far down the list, and average pictures placing very high. i've given 10's to the dead last picture twice.
i haven't taken a photography class, so nothing i "know" is offical learned material. i experiment. play. and i attack pictures like they were paintings. i critique them like they were paintings. because that's what i'm familiar with.

I got a couple of comments about using the Rules of Thirds for my Royal Blue picture. I tried all options and angles before submitting the picture and this one was the version I preferred. Maybe if I'd have shot it differently it would have come higher in the ratings, who knows? Got a lotta great compliments on the pic from people who saw the picture the same way that I saw it, and that's great. Different opinions from different people...we can't all like the same thing or see it in the same way, that's what makes each individual photographer unique.
It's a lottery: when and if you do take a shot that EVERYONE likes and sees in the same way as you, that's when you hit the no 1 position! Just keep on trying...

At least do us a favor and skip every 4th challenge. It seems your Rants appear on about that cycle. Very interesting.

Agree with what Muckpond said. You have a decent camera. You are a photography student and presumably one of very few people on this site intending to make a career in photography. Methinks you would welcome the comments from a wide range of viewers even more than the average submitter rather than dismissing them as "dumb comments".
Since you have these rants frequently, it is rather offensive towards the people who take the time to view and comment on your pictures to dismiss them as "dumb comments", just because they are not to your liking.
Here's another dumb comment for you: I liked the petals of your flower picture but the background was very distracting (too much breeze?). I like flower pictures but since there are kazillion pictures of flowers out there, they need to be taken in an original manner to overcome the cliché factor. Your picture was average at best in terms of originality and visual impact.

my first reaction when i submitted a picture here was "wow those are DUMB comments"
then i spent a while trying to work out in my head what i was complaining about. all of the stuff the comments complained about were either out of my control, or artistic decisions, or a combination of both.
basically, people here don't like my style. ...because, well, technically, it's very bad. understandable. different people's opinions and stuff.
i don't know why i felt the comments were sillier when they were against my artistic decisions. lol.

Wow, Arachnophilia! I've missed out on your photos until now, because of my absence from the site, but I just looked at them and I think they're fantastic! You definitely get the lisae stamp of approval :). If you want to do better here, you know what you have to do. Take the processing down a notch and try to achieve a bit more clarity... but don't compromise that style. You have a lot of flair.
BigSmiles, that goes for you too. You have flair in abundance, you just don't have mass appeal. Whether you want that or not is up to you, and you'll have to work at it. Doing badly here doesn't mean you're a bad photographer. Isn't that obvious? It just means you're not a popular one.

I like your style as well Arachnophilia.
Art style photography here is going to do poorly as a general rule.
Many people do not understand it and often times get angry about it ( I don't know why ).
There is a large contingent of voters that believe a photo should look like a photo...meaning everything is in focus, the subject is clearly defined and the lighting should be perfectly exposed on all surfaces.
That simply is too limiting.
Develope your own style....find out through experimentation what you "feel" moves you and then keep at it until you are happy. That should take care of the rest of your life :-D

I think the key here is to have a good mix of..
1. originality
2. visual appeal
3. symbolic appeal and the wow factor
4. the resources to pull it all off. (which unfortunately I am lacking right now.)

wow thanks. :D
suprisingly, there's not a whole lot of processing. mostly just color/contrast adjustments, and sharpen. that's my camera. it's really that bad. but that happens to be what i like. i'm going to get a better one soon, but i'll still use the one i have now a lot.
and i know i'm not going to do well on this site. i didn't come here to do well.
there's an old concept i learned from chess. you know how to tell the person who just lost? he's smiling. because he just learned something. i'm here to learn, even if i do the opposite.
hokie: thanks. i completely agree. rules are terrible things in art.
