I took some photos at an outdoor concert a few weeks ago, and one of the performers actually Googled herself and stumbled across a photo I took of her and posted in my journal- she is ecstatic about the photo and wants to know how much I'd charge her to use it on her site, in her next CD, etc. I'd like to just charge a flat fee for her to buy the image from me for use however she wants, and I'd just retain the right to use it to promote my photography. So how much is reasonable?

And I may have a couple other good ones of her that I'd like to offer her as well. Should I offer some sort of "package deal"? What kind of pricing? Thanks for any suggestions!

1. Don't "sell" it to her, but negotiate any kind of unlimited usage license you feel appropriate. And get a written release from her so that you can use/sell/exploit it yourself. Giving her an exclusive license should cost even more ....

2. The charge should be a LOT for an unlimited, perpetual license -- I think the Graphic Artists Guild or one of those organizations has some pricing guidelines ... check with the refrence desk at your local library to see what they might have.

3. If the person really "can't afford" too much, invoice for the full amount and then discount the price to whatever it needs to be ... that way you can charge the next customer the correct (established) price.

Cool, thanks for the tips. I hadn't even considered some of those things!

Okay, today I went by the library and they don't have the book:

//www.gag.org/pegs/index.php

I really don't want to pay $40 for the book, especially if I only end up charging her $50 or something for the photo! :)

I tried to see if there was any similar price guideline info available at the library and came up dry. Has anyone got any experience with a situation like this that can give me a reasonable price range? How much have you charged in the past for performance photos?

Thanks folks.

There must be a larger library (university?) where they may have the book. Otherwise, do check out the larger stock sites, NOT the micropayment sites, and see what they are chargig for the type of use you are selling. $50 is definitely underselling, but of course you do need to consider what the customer can afford. Try to get a credit where the image is used publicly, tha can help to offset a lower selling price, get you some exposure.
