OK, I'm a little hesitant to post this because things have been running a little hot, but I don't have time to make 30-40 comments which are exactly the same.

There were a great deal of portraits which were excellent, but fell short for the simple reason that the WB wasn't set correctly to accomodate a flash.

I'm writing this as a tip instead of a criticism because it is an easy thing to do which can provide tangible benefits to your pictures. If you look at your portrait compared to others and the skin of your subject (or the background for that matter) seems bluer than others, then you likely used a flash and didn't have the WB set to flash (for cameras which do not automatically sense this).

Lighting seems to be a big part of portraiture. Personally I did not enter because I didn't think I could provide the proper light to do a good portrait. I was impressed with some shots which used obviously natural lighting to good effect.
