Brad - No disrespect, but didn't you mean to direct this comment at the other "negative" thread going on right now (High contrast dissapointment...) that had issues with the ribbon winning entries directly? This thread has mostly been about recognizing the photographer of challenge entries in general and whether it's fair to know who they are or not - and does it impact voting, etc...

Gosh people, have fun, live life a little less stressful, go out and shoot with your passion for the love of photography, and not for statistics and subsequent fighting over little sh*t. It's only driving people away - people, experienced or not, right or wrong, opinionated or not, yet still people we all can learn from and enjoy their lives and passion for a common bond that brought us all together here in the first place.
Funny thing is, Lesley (goodman) really sums it up best in her Bio:
"you wont find me whining about my score,
i like tagging along most times.
this site is about having fun isn't it?"
Now the horse is dead - quit beating it!!

If you can pick these people out they had best go and work more on their 'talent'. |
I'm glad when people recognize my style, it makes me proud. <:-)
Not because all of my images are exactly the same, but because most of the pictures I submit have to please me first.

Some people take these virtual ribbons WAY to serious.
Go out and spend more time taking photos, smelling the fresh air and less time behind the computer moaning. |

I can guarantee that it's not fixed...if it were, I would not have two ribbons and a 4th place finish. I am the most hated member of DPC.

Yes, it's the same beach, but it's not Haystack rock. It's actually a much smaller rock on the opposite end of the beach.
Originally posted by glad2badad: Now, you did have Oregon in the title, and this challenge entry was just after Zoomdak had 2 Blue Ribbons and 1 Top Ten in the weeks preceeding...it's almost like you wanted people to think it was Zoomdak? |
Yes, the word "Oregon" is in the title. I live in Oregon. I was born here, and I've lived here for much longer than Zoomdak has been alive. I've been taking photos of Oregon for longer then he's been alive too. I even photographed Haystack Rock long before he was born, although that was mostly with 35mm cameras. Lots and lots of other people have photographed Haystack Rock too, and I'm pretty sure that at least a few of them did so before young Master Thomas got around to it. The photo that I created just happens to have some of the same elements that many of Zoomdak's photos have (rocks, water, reflections, etc..)
I believe that Ansel Adams was one of the first, if not the very first, to photograph Half Dome and El Capitan in Yosemite. He did a great job too. But, does that mean that everyone that has photographed it since then has been trying to fool people into thinking that their photo was done by Ansel Adams? I don't think so. Does it mean that their photos are any less valid or original than his? Again, I don't think so.
If you read my comments you will see that I was not trying to make a 'Zoomdak' photo. We (my wife and I) set out to go to a totally different place that day for a totally different photo. But, we started out too late and ended up stopping at Cannon Beach instead. Thomas and others had already used Haystack Rock many times, so I wanted something a little different. Luckily there are lots of beautiful rock formations all along the Oregon coast. Heck, almost any coastline has tons of beautiful views. All you gotta do is open your eyes and look around. Which brings up another point I'd like to make; perhaps it isn't the fact that Zoomdak takes photos of Haystack Rock that makes his photos so nice and wins him ribbons. Maybe it's the WAY he takes photos of Haystack Rock that makes the difference. I've seen tons of photos of that rock formation over the years, and few are as good as his.

I believe it IS mostly the same. There's a relatively new and vocal minority spreading bad feelings, and perhaps a few old-timers who inevitably agree with the complaint du jour. Underneath it all we're still the same happy bunch, and this will pass. ;-) |

Now before I make my comment, please note I do not think anyone is cheating.
That said, it seems as though there is a blind eye to a fact that many of the top photographers ARE recognized and ARE called out in the comments during the challenge of what is supposed to be an anonymous voting venue.
I'm not sure why it is considered bad to agree that this does happen. I don't think you are saying anything terrible about the people who have a distinct style, nor the people voting. But I do think its silly to say it doesn't happen.
I will pick on Heida (sorry!) because she is so very distinct in her use of dodging and burning. The comments on many of her ribboned photographs is a veritible guestbook of hellos and call-outs.
Is this a problem? I really couldn't say. I don't know any of you very well, I'm generally quiet on these boards so I wouldn't feel comfortable judging someone's voting style nor discerning what goes through their head when they vote on someone they "know".
However, I DO think it is a legitimate concern whether people are able to vote on the photograph and NOT the photographer if they do "know" who it is and consider them a friend or at least someone of recognition on this site.
Perhaps I am reading everything wrong and those who have brought up this phenomenon ARE trying to point fingers and bad-mouth, but I choose to see it as a simple topic of discussion.
Is it possible to vote without bias on a photograph if you know who the photographer is (with an almost certainty)? That is a retorical question that should be asked of onesself, I'm not asking it to be answered. :)
I myself recognize the work of some of the artists here and I like to think that I give them a fair shake, but I confess that I'm not certain I always do. That's something I need to work on.
Again, I don't see mentioning this aspect of voting as a bad thing and I see no reason to ridicule anyone who has noticed it. At the same time I am not seeking nor did I think anyone else was, to diminish the work of those who have distinctive styles - I think it would be a disservice to them in fact if they were to (note here I am not saying they do) get "gimme" points simply based on who they are, not the quality of their work.
As good as everyone is here, everyone has room to grow and a need for a true representation of how their work is received.
So anyway. Long winded as usual.
I'll shush now. :)

Many memebers here know each other, use each other to bounce ideas off of prior to a challenge, post challenge submissions on their PaD sites or other image sharing sites, etc.
So?
OK, to some, a submission may not be truely anonymous - it's a given.
Suppose, and I am NOT gonna do the math, 10 people were swayed on their vote, and say voted a "buddy's" shot a 10 instead of a 7 or 8, in the grand scheme of numbers, will have little effect on the overall placing afer 250 + votes have been cast.
Maybe I'm wrong, and am by no means a math wizard, but such is life.
We can accept it and have FUN taking and sharing pictures, or we can sit around and kick and cry unfair, and sulk, and..
I fell off the fence onto the fun side - who's gonna' join me?

Konador tied with Wayne in one challenge by having the EXACT same score. I'm not going to say he did anything wrong, but what if he showed it to "10 friends" in 'Tics? Guess what, he tied instead of finished 3rd cuz of it and you don't even have to do the math. ;)

That would be great if it were NOT the same place as it used to be! Imagine remaining the same forever! How unbelieveably boring! Every picture striving for the Neatimage look, I can sharpen more than you and a photograph must look like THIS (what we do!). What lunacy is this........But I guess, after it all and when it has passed, you will be a happy group as usual! I think I'm going to be sick..................
