I've noticed a few very disheartening threads about winning, cheating, and voter bias.

I love this site and I have recently discovered the forums and find the topics discussed her very thought provoking and entertaining.

However, my reason for loving this site is the feedback!
I don't ever expect to ever win a ribbon, but it's not a priority for me either. I have an entry that I like, but with a very middling score in the "Branches" challenge. And I woke up today to 2 new comments and 1 favorite. It made my day! So I'm resolving that I need to go make a few more constructive comments and choose some favorites (and hopefully make someone else's day).

Does anyone else find it frustrating when they do not receive useful comments? Many times I'll receive comments like "nice" or "I like it", but nothing to tell me how to improve, or even what in particular they admire. Luckily I receive far more that are really helpful.

I wonder what people's criteria is for checking a comment as helpful. I try to only check that off if the comment offers some insight into what they like or do not like. But I notice many people seem to check off all their comments whether or not they offer meaninful feedback about the photograph.

Just curious what other people's thoughts are... And a plea that if reading the forums is getting you down, go check out the photos in challenges and portfolios and comment!

My branch shot has

4.9076 score
9 comments

Since this is my first entry, I was hoping for a lot more comments. Even "I like it" would be better than nothing!

I don't think 9 is that low a number. Looking back at the challenges I've entered I've got an average of about 10 comments on each entry. I'll keep working on writing comments for the Branch entries and hopefully I'll get to yours.

I agree with you on why you are a member of this site. I am just a beginner, and any "constructive" comment helps so much in learning this new hobby. One thing I try to do when I comment, is tell the photographer what I like about their photo, or what I don't like about it. (I hate it when I get something that says, 'waste of my time' or something useless like that)

I've been trying to comment more and more on the photos entered in the challenges. Gotta share the love, right?

In one way or another, almost all comments are helpful. Even a simple "nice shot" comment tells you that someone thinks the photo is good enough to take the time and let you know. There are maybe 3 comments I received that I have not marked helpful. Two are blank and one was someone's childish revenge for something I posted.

For every three detailed feedback I leave, I leave one simple comment. Otherwise, the load would be overwhelming. This way I feel as though I've done my part and I do agree that constructive comments regardless if I agree or disagree are the ones that resinate with me the next time I shot/post an image.
