I have a couple of questions - if someone could answer I'd appreciate it.
It is supposedly a brand new device.
Is the shutter really that loud (much louder than on my 60D)?
I put in the CF from my D60, and the first pic I took with 20D had a sequential number i.e. 381-8192.jpg, which is continuing counting from D60. The counter on both is set to continuous.
Is there a way to check how many pics were taken with the camera?
thanks for your answers!

Well I don't know about the 20D and the shutter noise but I put my friend's CF card into my brand new 350D and the numbering jumped from 200 odd to 2500, which was the number on the CF card... So unless you format the card the numbering carries on from the card's latest photo and not the cam's!
Hope that helps

Thank you James and Thierry.
I'll learn to live with the noise. It is a good noise after all.
as far as the counter goes, I'm curious if I can reset it somehow. It would be nice if I were able to keep track of shutter actuations.

I had the same questions when I got my twennydee.
First exposure was my 3yold who asked me if I broke it. She now calls it the "Ketlaketlak" I now love that noise:)
The card thing is (I think) so you don't accidentally overwrite files with "younger" numbers when you dowload them, or on the card. Mine started at around 300 for no reason at all.
Hope you enjoy it! |

The noise doesn't bother this particular deaf photographer :-)

Although I've not shot personally with the 20D, I have shot with folks shooting with it, and have not found the shutter noise obtrusive. The card numbering thing is intentional behavior, as BlackDot posted, it's to keep photos from being named identically.
You should be able to reset the numbering through the menu.

Thanks, y'all!
I'll be trying it out over the weekend. Maybe I even shoot a portrait with it, you never know!?

The shutter is definitely much more noisy, I had the D30 before.
On the numbering thing, I tried everything to get the numbering on my old cards that had been used in the D30 to start from 0 but nothing worked so I had to get new cards and mark them so that they would only be used in the 20D. I tried formatting the cards, resetting from the menu and none of them worked. If anyone has an answer for this I would be interested.

There was a thread recently about someone buying a camera from B&H and they claimed that it already had 200 or 2000 actuations on it... I wonder if this falls into the same category, i.e. were these people wrong to assume that?
Not accusing anyone of anything, just trying to figure out how to get the counter straigh. |

I wouldn't worry too much about a few hundred shots on a camera rated for about 100,000. As long as the warranty starts when you send in the form, it's fine.
