I took a few self portaits recently. I don't usually like that side of the camera, but I got a new IR remote so I just got in front and held the button down for a while. Please let me know which one you like the best. Also tell me what my model is doing wrong (the photographer could use some constructive criticism as well).
1. I'll lead with a shot of me getting ready for my photo shoot. (Yes my facial hair does grow all the way down my neck.)
2. This is my "am I supposed to believe that load of crap?" face.
3. Here is one where I had to photoshop out my nosehair.
4. And finally here is an older photo that shows slightly more of the right side of my face.
Actually, the technical reason for all the half-lit face shots is that I really didn't have any lighting to speak of to properly light the whole thing (I have a big head) and artistically I just think it looks cool, like the Beatles album or something. So tell me what you think. The winner will become my new profile photo!

I like number 4. It's got that "James Dean" look to it. They're all actually pretty good (I'm not much of an expert at portraits). Nice work! |

#2 makes you look like a smug S.O.B.
#4 is good with me too.

I'd go with the rebel James Dean look...
Reminds me a lot of my own self-portrait:

I like #2. Doesn't look smug to me, and I like the high contrast look. I think it would be better if you cropped some of the empty space on the right though.
I think #4 makes you look a little on the angry side.

Yeah, #2 might look better cropped so that face/space border is centered... or maybe even cropped so that it's a vertical image? what do you think? By the way, Mick, I really like your self portrait. Has anybody ever told you you resemble Christopher Lloyd?

that all look very good, the background is a little distracting in the first three. I like that you aren't filling the full frame but mabey experment with different subject location. I like the first one the best |

I gotta admit, I'm a little surprised that everyone likes #4. I used to like it, but not so much anymore.

What is distracting about a plain background? I do plan on trying some different locations outside, mainly because I prefer natural lighting.

I'd try cropping it to either 5x4 horizontally, or 4x5 vertically.

Nope, that's a new one. My wife used to say that I look a lot like Mel Gibson, but I never saw much resemblance. Probably just wishful thinking on her part. :)
After the Self-Portrait III challenge there was a thread about lookalikes or something like that, and someone said that I look like George Carlin. Whoever said that must be blind or crazy because I'm obviously MUCH prettier than George Carlin.
