Wow! I just took some of my first official macro shots with my new lens. It is great! Here is one of the pics
Thanks to all who helped me pick out the lens, and for everyone who has posted and will continue to post tips on macro photography.
Any comments on the photo, especially areas to improve upon, will be gladly accepted and appreciated, and I'll return comment for comment as well.

One thing to work on is making sure your DOF is not causing a large blurry spot under your bug :0)
Its something that's easy to get used to though. Raise your viewpoint by 1 inch or so, and the tip of that leaf would be a negligible element. Same if you moved to the right an inch or two. f/2.8 is cool, but I like to keep it above f/5 on macro because of that. Although it can work to great effect to have it shallow, so just mess around :0)
You might actually try to crop that out, but on this pic you'd lose the wonderful detail on the edge nearest the bug.
Have fun with your new lens!

I agree with wavelength about the depth of field i would like to see a bit more of the bug in focus. Great detail though, makes me want to go out and buy a macro lense |

Okay, nobody should expect a first attempt to be perfect, but I'm really impressed. It's shots like that that make me think I might be forced to buy a dSLR one day.

no one forced me... i think it was freedom that guided my choice.

It's just that I don't want to be bothered by the size of a dSLR, but when I see what they can do, part of me really wants one. Let's say I'm torn...

It's well worth it. I went from a Coolpix 8700 to my dSLR, and would never even think of turning back. Beside the versatility of the dSLR, it takes better photos becuase of the physical size of the sensor too.

Macros are fun. You'll have a blast getting up close with all kinds of little guys... soon you'll be capturing stuff like this!

It'll take some work, but hopefully I'll get there.
