gizmodo article on a type of tripod, I guess...

Sounds useful! And will fit in a pocket or bag for that time you need, but have forgotten the tripod.

It works great for light P&S cameras, but dSLR's will move too much.

Not according to the description of the the Red pod:

"For digital or film SLR cameras and regular camcorders"

Would like to here from somebody that has actually used/tried it though.

I heard then you have to hold the ipod sideways

Sorry, couldn't resist

What about this?

Doesn't help with vertical shots, but allows for a bit more flexibility when positioning the camera... I have one and it fits in a pocket (even has a pocket clip).

I think you find a wall or a pole, and rest the pod thing between the wall or pole and the camera, with you holding the camera. I think there's a picture of this on the gizmodo article.

good question though :)

I also have the Noma mini-tripod, pacpinto. That thing is quite unstable and would not be usable by anyone with a camera larger than ours (S1 IS). I watch it bend under the weight of the S1... a 20d would make short work of it, not to mention the constant falling over the moment you attach any decent lense to the body.

All that said... buying my pod right now. That looks amazing.

what if you want to do a slow exposure (I guess that is what I ment, but hadn't specified.) Like say you wanted to do a 15 second night shot with the pod?

I have been doing this for years, only with a bag of frozen peas...

I think it's funny that someone actuly is producing this now, it's an old trick of the trade.

Yes I suppose it can hold a lot more weight. But you can't (at least easily) put the camera on a certain angle... Ah well nothing like a real tripod, right?

I've seen these in Jessops and the like - never looked too secure to me. I have a couple of bean bags i've butchered and filled with beans. I _still_ need to take them apart and put zips in them.

Hum, a bag of rice is great for those on the low budget. We used this rice in school for video projects.

are these things just sandbags with a 1/4-20 bolt?

If they were full of lead shot, they might be useful.
