I thought I might ask since I've noticed some of you are web-gurus. I'm trying to install a cgi-ran chat on my website...for the life of me I cannot get the darn things to work. I've tried bluechat and gtchat...adjusted permissions, tried the cgi in and out of the bin, yadda yadda. Virtual hosting through ventures online. I have built-in entropy chat and javascript chat...but they stink. Also, I don't have mysql database (yet) so I can't run php. I can't get this darn thing to work!! Any ideas/suggestions welcome. BTW...attempting to set this up for dpfanatics as a way of keeping things fun but also keeping threads on topic.

thanks.

If the script has a .CGI extension, try renaming it to .PL (perl). Make sure the first line is something like

#!/usr/bin/perl

And make sure that you chmod the file to something like 755 or 655. 650 might work, too, assuming your webserver shares the same group as you user.

This is all assuming that this is a unix-based machine, which it sounds like.

If you still have problems, you should probably contact the host company, as they may have some things setup against cgi.

Hi Lisa --

Both of the chat scripts you mention require Perl. Did you edit the Perl script to set the correct path to the Perl interpreter?

From: //hollingworthventures.com/vosn/#pathtoperl
One of the first things you must do when configuring a script, is set the correct path to the Perl interpreter, which is the engine responsible for processing the script. The path to Perl on our servers is: #!/usr/bin/perl

If that doesn't fix it, give us more detail on what is and isn't happening so we can troubleshoot the problem.

The cgi files initially had pl extensions. They didn't work. So, I did as recommended by the chat creator and renamed to cgi. Also, the original code already had the correct perl path. :( I tried a million different variations of chmod...didn't help. Gtchat has an auto install.pl file that is supposed to automatically setup and configure the chat. It didn't work. So, I went back and adjusted variable addresses, file permissions, etc. manually. Still didn't work. My brain is completely fried...not even enough juice left to play with my new macromedia flash program (and that's sad because I've used flash before).

I'm nuts enough to let one of you guys at my control panel to take a wack at it if you're a) really bored b) masochistic c) wanting a good laugh at the inner workings of a web-idiot's site.

Any takers??

Lisa,

Before you do that, might I suggest you try running the perl program from the shell prompt (assuming you do have shell access) to see what sort of error you get.

If it runs fine when YOU run it, but won't run from the web server it usually indicates one of two things:

1) Your permissions for the executable are not setup properly for the web server to execute it, OR

2) Your web server expects executable only in specific directories (such as ~/cgi-bin, or ~/cgi/, or ~/cgibin) or is not allowed at all.

If you still are grasping at straws... let me know as there is a very simple perl-cgi script that can tell you right away whether your cgi scripts will run properly in your current configuration.

Alright...I started again from scratch. I hope you gurus are out there. Here's the situation...the install.pl is running but I cannot access 5 folders that are essential to complete the install and run the chat.

Location of folders...public_html/cgi-bin/gtchat/*whatever*

I can access any and all files in the same directory though...only the subdirectories are giving me problems. I've tried a ton of chmod variations to no avail...am I missing something?? HELP!!

Lisa,

Are you now at the shell prompt? Do you "see" the subdirectories there when you do an 'ls'? Or do you get some error message when you try to access any of those files?

I finally got it up and running...needs a lot of tweaking but I could use some testers. Anyone who cares to give it a try goto DPC Fanatics Chat Don''t worry about the rest of the world looking in...it''s not linked to anything...no one else knows about it. Hope to see ya there...hope it works too!

DOH...thanks for all of the help everyone. I appreciate it! :)

For those of you who weren't around last night, there is a dpc fanatics exclusive chat room here If you think you'll ever want to chat live with your fellow addicts (the countdown to the results & new challenge was pretty lively last night), save the link as this thread will soon disappear into oblivion.

Good luck with this week's submissions and shooting for 'old stuff!'
