Thanks! Although my 717 has served me very very well, and I plan to continue using it for macros as it totally kicks ass in that arena, I can't wait to see the portraits and environmentals I can achieve with the Nikon.
I understand that 90% of photography is in the artist and 10% in the equipment, I will be happy to see what that extra boost of equipment will do to my portfolio.
Watch out ribbon winners, I'm so out to get you! |

Sorry, there are always those of us who prefer to swim upstream, walk against the light, turn on a red. Guess I'm a rebel who isn't a Rebel. :) |

Good choice, I have heard that there are a handful of areas where the D50 is actually improved on the D70, particularly noise.
It might be worthwhile reading up on flash sync techniques for Nikon. I can't remember where, but I read up on an article that praised Nikon bodies up the wazoo for the outdoor shooting capabilities of the High Flash Sync speed.
However, it does require a little jury-rigging. I believe it is possible to go over 1/2000th of a second sync, but I think you have to mask a contact or something?

Hope it's useful. Watch out for the in-camera sharpening. I found that to be really heavy when I was testing it. Halos around everything. Too bad I didn't think to check it first.
Also, if they aren't on the market yet, be aware that SD cards have already been released in Asia in the 150x, 2GB variety. |

Thanks for the advice and the link, eschelar. It is true that the D50 corrects a few of the D70s problems. I have read many of the head-to-head comparisons and though D70 does still do a few things better (faster), I think the D50 addresses all of my needs.
I plan to choose 2 lenses right off (Nikon of course), an "all-purpose" mid-range and a tele. Still debating on which 2, but think I have them narrowed down.
I plan to break (and empty) the piggy bank in about 2 weeks so any advice on lenses or other add-ons would be appreciated. |

I'm not exactly sure of what others have been reading, but the actual image pipeline of the D70 & D50 is the same. The only real improvement of the D50 over the D70 is the larger eyepiece, and if your not an eyeglass wearer it no big deal. Nikon also is commited to updating the firmware of the D70 so any operational improvements that might exist will be in later firmware updates.
The D70 is a much better deal for only a $100 more. DOF preview and two command dials alone is worth the difference, not to mention CF support. |

Lenses? Depends on how much you want to spend. For telephoto you can not beat the 70-200 VR 2.8 but it cost plenty and is heavy. I love my 18-70 D70 kit lens for walk around and it can be had for aboout $280 at B&H. But don't you get a kit lens with the D50? |

The kit lens is an option, the 18-55... Good on distortion, bad on speed, flexibility, etc. The 18-70 is still a much better choice, imo. The 55-200 has some great options, but too slow imo. I never use anything over 85mm on the telephoto end anyway. So I'm not the person to ask on tele's. :) |

Here it is from dpreview "The only key difference between the D50 and D70 from an image pipeline point of view is that the image processing algorithm has now been tweaked to improve rendition of highlight detail (to clip less and have a softer roll-off to the highlight)."
They are talking about software not hardware. You can install a custome tone curve into the D70 that will trump that. Hardware wise the D70 still has more functionality.

Cindi-I for one don't like the kit lens and I might stand alone there but I would recommend looking into the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8. Can't hurt to do some research at the very least but don't trust me ask around this site to people who own one and see what they say.
Look at these samples from
Canon and Nikon. More Canon/Tamron user are here at the moment so those samples are better but give it an honest look...you be glad you did.

I just bought a 350D I and enjoy the heck out of it. I am happy for you to come to a decision. You won't regret it. Enjoy! The brand does not make any differance! It's the monkey behind the lens.
Congrats and, as some one had said, happy lens hunting!
