I recently purchased a Nikon EN-EL3 battery off Ebay that I suspect may be fake, or old. The contacts are dirty, which aroused my suspicion that this item was not "Brand New" as it was described. But then I compared it to my new battery that came with my D70s and found several differences:

1. The battery in question is more of a dull, matte plastic, while the one that came with my camera is glossy.
2. There is no "holographic" Nikon sticker on back of the battery in question like there is on the one that came with the camera.
3. There is no serial number (or part number or whatever) on the battery in question like there is on the battery that came with the camera.

What do you think? (I am definitely complaining to the seller b/c it obvioulsy isn't new)

It's probably NOT a Nikon battery. Better to just go buy a Nikon for $70 or whatever, and be done with it lol.

batteries not made by the manufacture are usually better than those made by the manufacturer. Altho if it was dirty i'd be worried about it too.

I have had horrible luck with buying generic batteries. They never hold a charge.

I just bought a non-Nikon from BH and went through one charge on it. It seemed to die MUCH faster than the Nikon. probably was not worth saving the $10

I have two generics and one nikon battery. I can't tell the difference anymore. I literally typed "D70 battery) into google and bought the least expensive ones I could find - love them - I could dig up where I got them if anyone is interested, they were $18 I think?

I'm old and forget numbers, but they were significantly less - although I haven't ribboned yet- I wonder...

See, if you wanna ribbon, you gotta shoot genuine Nikon batteries. Accept nothing less.

That's pretty much wrong. They almost always won't hold the charge as long, and will consistently (albeit not noticeably, but moreso than the batteries made for the charger) decrease in life after each charge.

Generic batteries are fine, but from a respectable brand. Ebay is not the place to buy batteries. Here is a link for an energizer (the bunny) brand on Amazon for $25.
They also have others for as low as $15.

Counterfeit batteries are not only sub-standard, but can be dangerous. See //www.cipa.jp/english/attention/

Also, since you mentioned Nikon, see //support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=8119

Generic batteries are fine; you know who to sue if something goes wrong so (I hope) the manufacturer doesn't cut too many corners when it comes to safety.

Although lots of folks have had good experience with reputalbel aftermarket batteries, the conditions under which this was sold to you are not honest. They marketed it as a Nikon battery, which it clearly was not, and it also has signs (the dirty contacts) that it is of poor quality. I would ask the seller to refund the money. At the same time, I would report the seller to Nikon. They are clearly selling counterfeit goods, which I'm sure Nikon will take a very dim view of. These sellers hurt the good reputations of the manufacturers as well as the customers that they scam.

It may give you a few more shots before going flat.
