I've gotten a few suggestions about adjusting the contrast in my "Branch" submission...what's it mean??

What editing program you have? In general, with any editing program, you have a "contrast" adjustment. Basically it clips the bright and the dark ends of the tonal range when you increase contrast, so you have more whites and more blacks. This isn't the most sophisticated way to increase contrast, but it certaiunly illustrates the raw effect.
Here's an outtake for the "Light II" challenge; a fairly contrasty shot already but with a full tonal range:
Here's the same shot tweaked too far with the "contrast" adjustment:
Hope this helps.

it means make the blacks blacker and the whites whiter. or in the case of a color shot, make the darker tones darker and lighter tones lighter. a lot of people also might say that the picture looks a bit "flat" this means the same thing. if you have photoshop, go to image>adjustments>curves and also learn the dodge/burn tools. here's a tutorial in dpc by the famous Pedro: //www.dpchallenge.com/tutorial.php?TUTORIAL_ID=30
or if you find that your camera is consistently producing pictures with not much tonal range, you can probably adjust the contrast levels in your camera. this is basically a similar (and watered down) step as what you would do in photoshop.
