Understand that different people look at things in different ways, but as I was watching my first entries voting record, I noticed two distinct things, number one is NO comments, and as I KNOW I received a ONE from one person (early on average dropped almost one full point with one vote, had to be a one) and they did not leave any comment, and in the rules of voting in bold print it states "If you feel a photograph deserves a vote of 1, 2 or 3, please include a comment with your vote explaining why you felt it deserved a "below average" score." How do they get away with doing that, seems like those types are trying their best to rig the contest with low scores on any picture that they either do not like or think may be good enough to place higher than theirs. I have not given out any ones, but every two or three I think I have commented on, as it plainly states I am supposed to!! Secondly, have had almost 25% of people that view the picture, not vote at all, why is that? Thanks in advance for any input. Jacque

All I can say is take it easy. :) Don't let one low vote ruin your day. In the end you will get so many votes a single one isn't going to do any big difference. Concentrate on the comments you GET. I think many people like to view pictures through before handing out their first vote. It's easier to be fair if you've got some perspective. |

As far as not getting any comments a lot of people give votes then come back at another time and do the comments. Also, there has been record number of entries lately and often it is hard to comment on every photograph. The larger the entries, usually the lower the comments. There are simply too many to go through. Good luck with this and future challenges. |

Everyone scores differently, and everyone has a good defense for the way they score. I use the entire scale when voting, which means I give out 1's. It doesn't "necessarily" mean someone is trying to rig the voting.
In the past, there has been problems when voters say ANYTHING that isn't 100% complimentary on an image. People get defensive and PM the voter during the challenge, or calls the person (or comment) out in the forums for public debate. It has helped reduce the comments on lower scoring entries.
It's sad, but it's true. |

Thanks so much to all for taking the time to answer. Was not worrying as much about the one (though still do not understand how) as to why you are allowed to give them out without comments. As the rules say you should do. That was my main point, honestly LOL. And did not even think of looking at them all before voting, although with less entries, that may be the best way to do it, with this many, I could not do it. I did vote 100% on shoes, and will try to do the same here. Thanks again for the input, it does help!! Jacque |

It's not actually a hard and fast rule that you HAVE to leave a comment, it's more along the lines of a strong suggestion. It'd be really nice if you do it and the photographer may or may not appreciate it, but you aren't getting the boot if you don't. |

I finally got one comment, and as my average has dropped from almost 6 to 5.3, I know I have recieved some 1's, 2's and 3's. The one comment will help me as I did not notice the background problem he/she mentioned, also said I should reduce the noise, but I have not the software capable of doing that yet, so no help there LOL. Liked the photo though, and that makes me feel good too! LOL

Just because your score went from 6.x to 5.3 doesn't mean you are necessarily getting 1,2,3's. If your average score is 6.x and you get X number of votes in a row that are 5's, that will bring your average down.

Nice try, but mathematics is my base of knowledge, and you cannot drop there within ten or so votes without getting some ones or twos, take it like this, have about 40 votes average is almost 6, so total has to be around 235 or so, right? If you had 240 you would be at exactly 6. Now at 50 (about) you are at 5.3, so total has to be around 265, so for ten votes you AVERAGED 3.0, about, how can you do that without any 1,2, or 3's? LOL, you cannot!

My response was not meant to be mathematical, only suggestive. And for the record smarty pants, I have two advanced mathematical degrees...among my many.
You have to remember that no one likes your picture as much as you do (usually) and also that you are competing against 400+ other people (assuming your first challenge is the Branch challenge since your profile says 0 challenges entered). Just be thankful you are only a registered member and not a paying member with the addictive disease called 'updateitis.'

Try reading this tutorial and then you may not feel as bad: //www.dpchallenge.com/tutorial.php?TUTORIAL_ID=6
I have only entered 2 challenges so far but I found that the more entries in the challenge, the fewer comments you will receive, as people are trying to vote on so many entries.
Good luck in the challenge! |

Thanks rsm, have read that, and was not upset so much about getting the low scores from raters, just wanted to know WHY, as the rules said if you post a score under three, please tell why, so I took it to mean one should do that, that is ALL I was saying. Jacque |

One of the problems can be that when someone does leave a critical comment accompanying a very low score, they are all too apt to get a PM from the photographer expressing some form of disagreement. This is why we had to go back to giving people the ability to comment anonymously during the voting period, as they could end up being lobbied/chastised during the voting.
People here are a lot better at asking for critical feedback than at accepting it.
Note that you will learn more by leaving lots of comments for other people than by having people comment on your photos, and it will have the benefit of having people visit your profile page (to send you a PM), and thereby seeing more of your photos and having the chance to comment on them at that time, when it is a truly voluntary act, and not under the pressure of voting. |

I second what GeneralE posted! I'd add that as you participate in more challenges, you'll come to realize that at the end of the challenge, by looking at the statistical distribution of votes, and the comments you do receive, you will definitely develop a feel for why an image was or was not well-received. It took me a few challenges to understand this, and it's rough going initially, I know! You tend to focus on each low vote as if it were a sharp smack with a stick, LOL. That will pass.
Also remember that it's not the score that matters. Some "out of the box" images score low even though they are good images. Don't let a potentially disappointing score discourage you from submitting what you feel is a good image.
