First, thanks to all who commented and voted on my submission, it was much appreciated.
For those who were curious about how my 'Shoes' challenge was created, I backed off and shot this image showing the bit of gymnastics that was required. My models loved exaggerating the amount of effort required to hold this for my 30+ shots.
Btw, not knowing how much leg I was going to shoot, I made them roll their shorts up, causing many jokes about the camo nappys.
the set up....
the result.
The comments were very encouraging, but the score stayed in the 5.2-ish range all week, so I am curious.... did you not get it, or not like it? |

I actually thought this would be in the top 10. I thought it was very clever and well executed. I had actually given it a 9.
Just goes to show that the voters are fickle! :p |

I enjoy seeing setup outtakes...it's so much fun to see what others go thru to get the shot they are looking for! Plus, I can show my family that I'm not the only crazy person in the world. ;^)
All kidding aside, this is a fun image - very creative. A couple of things IMO that would have helped it is a bit more contrast (seems a little flat), and the womans foot would appear more natural to the stance you were trying to get if the toe was pointed out/away from the mans foot a little. As it is, it seems a bit "complicated".

So I'm guessing you didn't want "happy birthday" -
I disagree that voters are fickle, voters are looking through a LOT of photos, oh so many photos particularly in this challenge.
For me, and from my observations over the year I've been associated with this site, contrast wins the day. I found this for sure on the High Contrast challenge. I have never given so many above-5 scores for any challenge. Go back and look at what has won in all kinds of challenges, and you'll see there is not so much clever execution, but a very sharp photo, with lots of contrast, and great composition.
Your photo has a center composition. In and of itself this isn't bad, but when there isn't the WOW factor associated with it...
On my monitors, the blacks don't seem black enough, the whites aren't quite white. There isn't enough contrast for my eye. More directional, less diffuse, lighting would have helped, or if you were going to use the diffuse lighting you did use, a black background. The only really dark thing in the photo is the laces, and they aren't really very dark.
So it was really clever execution, but to be honest, I never even slowed down to think about how you did it, because the image didn't reach out and grab me. Now I see what you, and two others, went through, I certainly understand your frustration at your results.
I spent hours with a stupid little typewriter figuring out how to take a really cool photo of #3 . I look at that now and I'm still so proud of it, I worked really hard at every aspect of it, explored lots of aspects of that one little key, and created really cool motion blur in my opinion. 5.7 really hurt at the time. What won that challenge? flowers! An excellent shot of flowers, but stupid flowers nonetheless. A very sharp image of flowers, with lots of contrast, dramatic lighting, with excellent composition.
I feel your pain.

This is exactally the type of feedback I needed guys! And thanks especially to digitalknight for the in-depth review. I have to agree with you on several points, particularly the contrast (that's what I get for editing late at night). I have since re-edited the image and wow, what a diff!
So I keep my pride in check, pull up my socks and move onto the next thrilling challenge with a few more lessons learned! :)
Now, everyone go party for my birthday!!
P.S., thanks so much for the good wishes, you guys rock! :) |

wouldn't simply putting a different show on each foot have accomplished a similar look. Maybe I'm missing something here...??? |
