I need to shoot some pics for of some beautiful cut crystal antiques. I've tried lighting from directly beneath, but some of the pieces are quite large and the light difuses to quickly to light it all. Besides, I don't get that diamond like glitter I'm looking for. What type of light do they use in jewelry stores to get that glitter? I realize bright natural light is probably a good choice, but I'd kinda like to set it up in with artifical light. any suggestions?

A bright, directional light from directly above or just slightly behind the crystal is a good starting point.

what type of light? I know they use a special light in jewelry stores that make faceted items glitter.

I think it has reflectors specially designed to focus the light rays parallel, and it's a cold blue color. That's all I know.

If the jeweler isnt sure.... Contact a Swarovski store... they have tons of those lights to highlight the crystal and the store manager may know what kind they are

You might want to look at renting something like The Box. It comes with lights built in and is made specifically for this type of photography (stock, etc.). It's a big working space and it should prove to be very effective. If you want professional shots, this may be an investment to make.

I know that Calumet Photo offers rentals (both daily and weekly) and you can have a look on their site for exact prices at the store nearest you.

Hope this helps,
Lee
