Microsaft, is that Microsoft with a Brooklyn accent? ;oP

There are a few on the site who use this software. I only have version 7 and have been using PS for most things.

Some nice SC member has corrected the mistake in the thread title. I still think it sounds better as Microsaft.

I have used DIP 10 for some time (DIP 9 before that). I now use a combination of Raw Shooter Essentials, Noise Ninja, DIP 10 and Photoshop Essentials 3.

DIP 10 is, for me anyway, far more intuitive and easy to use than PS. However, eventually you will want to use layers and that is when it is time to gravitate to PS. Until then I think you will find DIP 10 easier and it will do everything PSE 3 will do but layers. I especially like their Image Library for managing my files.

So that is why I'm confused about layers I dont have it! Thanks for your comments it's helpful to know these things. Yes I am really pleased with the imaging library and from what I understand it's better than anything else.

Actually you do have layers but are never refered to in DIP as layers they are part of the stack in the column on the right (top), open pictures (files) are below... I have worked with quite a few layers on several photos in DIP.

To create a layer just mask out (marquee, Magic Wand or whatever) the area you want to copy to the layer then press CTRL-D. You will see that it goes on top of the stack. Layers can be moved up and down by clicking and holding then dragging it to the place in the stack you want. When working with two layers sometime try the Emphasis filter under effects and see what cool stuff you can do there. Select the layer you wish to stay unedited and then choose Emphasis and apply one of the cool filters.

Lock your layers (right click > lock) so that you don't accidently move your stuff out of sync with the background.

or if you want instant dreamy mood,

open a picture, CTRL+D to duplitcate the whole picture to a layer. Select the Top Layer, Over Saturate it (Touchup - Colors and Saturation), Blur it (Touchup - Blur - Gaussian to about 7), then make that top layer transparent by Effects - Transparency - Even - make it about 50% transparent.

We can't blend down the layers like the PS peeps, but that is easy enough to get around with soft edges and feathering.

I have both softwares and prefer to use the dip because it's a whole lot easier.

Just a boring shot I took this morn at Balboa Park...(Father Joe's (St. Vincent de Paul) Thanksgiving run walk).

Using two layers in DIP

About 2 and half minutes in dip: USM, straighten, duplicate photo to layer,

Top Layer: 50% (even) Transparency, Color and Saturation > Saturation > 200. Touchup > Blur > Gaussian blur > 7.0

Flatten, Save. Resize, Save-As... and we are done.
