Darn...I finally got the chance to use the camera club studio one last time before I let my membership expire and two weeks later we get the portrait challenge!

These are the the two I would have considered entering...leaning more toward the first one. I've shown some elsewhere on the site, but since I can't enter them into the challenge, I'd appreciate knowing what you think you might have scored these and why. I'd like to work more with artistic type lighting, but I wanted to try to get some of the basics down first.

I'm going to try to enter this one, as I love doing portraits and want very much to improve in that area...but so much depends on location and model availability.

What I love about these is that my model is not a size 10 typical barbie doll type woman, but I like to think that some beauty was accentuated and good points were brought out in these portraits? I think I might have titled either of these "Comfortable in Her Own Skin."

Heya Judy

I like how bright the first image is and I like the slight tilt you've gotten. The expression in the eyes is fine to me but the mouth seems a little "flat" in expression. I think just a small touch of NeatImage or something similar to blend the skintones might also enhance that shot a little for me. Regardless I feel that you captured some of the "Comfortable in Her Own Skin" and I like how close you zoomed to get it.

The 2nd image seems to have more ethos to commend it to the viewer. Several elements seem to work together in that shot to make it a more compelling image to me. I, too, like the diagonals in the background and I like the moderate use of DoF to pull the subject out a little. The angle of the shot works well given the lines. I wonder how a slightly tighter crop on the bottom would have done since the top of the head is cropped. I like the visible skin given the title you mentioned but I think the subject's face may have more impact with a tighter crop. Either way, I'd give both of these a better than average score as they both seem to have some direction behind them and show some understanding of what you're doing.

I much prefer the second one. It has a touch more formality to it as a "portrait" goes. I like her expression more and I enjoy viewing her entire head and hair as well. I think that jewelry unless an integral part of the person's persona, should be eliminated. Small stud earrings or hoops is ok, but I shy away from necklaces and bracelets as I find them distracting. I think what Kevin said about the lips might be that the lipstick is slightly applied "off." Instead of a hard line, I think a more smudged application might work better with such a crisp image. Just my opinion. Hope this helps!

I think they're both good in their own way. In the first some may dislike that the fingers are cropped out. They both have good lighting and bring out her eyes. When I look at them I dont immediately think 'wow, she's not a size 10 model' so I think bringing attention to that fact with your suggested title doesnt really do her justice. I know it's not meant in a bad way but why label at all? Let the viewer be the judge, you'd be surprised at how many people dont notice.

Very insightful and helpful comments from all. Thank you very much for taking the time to help me out. I appreciate it. I've been fooling around with many different crops and editing of all of the shots taken that day. I find that when I get a shot where I really like the expression or the eyes seem particularly "locked" into the camera, I play around with many different versions to try and bring out the very best of the photo. Or I do different things to promote a variety of moods or looks. Lots of fun! (Thank you photoshop.)

Thanks again. Any more comments are welcome and I am still interested in how they would have scored.
