I was stumbling thru the internet and I ran across this site:
Judgement of Paris.

I thought I'd post a link to it here since there's been discussion in the past week or so about larger models and whether or not they are/can be as beautiful as their thinner counterparts.

Also, I think maybe some of these shots demonstrate what azoychoka was trying to say about integrating backgrounds into portraits rather than simply making the portraits a study of the body.

There is a large gulf between curvacious and what we as a society call fat. A woman's self image and what most woman see as fat in themselves is an entirely different line of thought.

Agreed on both points. Simply trying to show that not all beautiful women are stick thin, nor do they need to be.

How interesting that I just posted a thread asking for comments on portraits I just did of a curvy gal! When I hit "post", these two threads showed up as 1 and 2.

I think it will be interesting in the portrait challenge to see how some regular folks who are not perfectly proportioned and airbrushed might be presented in a positive and artistic way. This includes heavier people, those with possibly distracting features (large ears or noses?), scars...you name it. Everyone wants to feel beautiful and confident. I think we've really succeeded as photographers when our models have that "wow" reaction to their photos...and they see the portraits as that beautiful person they know they are or can be. Not by making them someone else, but by presenting the best of who they really are.

I hope that makes sense. THAT is why I love portrait shots :)

I've always thought that heavier women tend to have much more prettier faces than thin women. It just usually seems to work that way. There are some very beautiful women on that site. But we are taught from being little that thin is pretty and so that's what we lean toward. If you look at antique paintings of women(nudes included)it was very rare to see a thin woman, being thin was a sign of poverty. To some they would say I'm thin but to me and my hubby I'm fat. No matter how wrong it may be, as much as we'd like, we can't change what society has now labeled as pretty.
