my submission for the D&L challenge was Death & Love. I almost withdrew the photo several times. I was quite sure everyone would find the subject to dark and disturbing. I am amazed at the number of comments I received and even more amazed that so many of you saw the warmth and love, not the pain and suffering. When I took the picture, I really had no intention of entering it in a challenge. The picture is of me and my mother. She moved in with my wife and I about a month ago so she could pass away with dignity and surrounded by love instead of in a cold sterile hospital. The picture is indeed one of love, warmth and tenderness. Thank you all for not just seeing it, but feeling it. My mother passed away Thursday, September 1st at 7:16 AM with me at her bedside. I'm gonna miss her.

For you David,

Know

You'll here that I am gone,
From this earth I have departed
But it's just my body resting
my journey has just started

Like the air that surrounds you
free from earth's restrain
You'll feel me in the breeze
smell my essence in the rain

Everytime you hear a child giggle
or see a butterfly
Know that I am near you
with angels by my side.

Know that I've not left you
although we are apart
We are closer now than ever
for now we share your heart.

It is a staggering event to lose one's mother, but for the joy in recalling that you had her. My heart goes out to you.

your photo told me all of that on an emotional level - a credit to your relationship with your mother, and your ability as a photographer. Thank you for sharing. I was/am touched by your example.
