I'be been working with JPGs for a while now since my P&S cameras, and have been recently introduced to shooting in RAW formats. Now, my question is, how do I get the RAW images from my Camera into my computer? Everytime I open my Camera under My Computer, theres an empty folder. I installed the WIA drivers and tried to import with Photoshop, but still its empty.

Is there a way to get the CR2 files from the camera using windows explorer? If not, how can I extract the CR2 files from my camera?

Thanks

The RAW files are there; you are set at "view image files" or somesuch and your computer doesn't recognize a RAW file as an image file. If you set it to "show all files" you will see them.

But that begs the issue of how to work with them. If you don't have Photoshop CS2, you can't work directly in PS with Canon RAW files. You need to open a RAW converter (Canon supplied one with your camera) and convert the RAW to TIFF so that PS can work with it.

There are other alternatives: RSE (Raw Shooters Essentials) and Bibble are two.

Thanks Rob, but I do have PS CS2, only question is that I can't get them.... How do I set it to show all files?

I already went to (in Windows Explorer) Tools > Folder Options > View > Show Hidden Files and Folders

I donno exactly what's going on, but if you have hooked your camera up to the computer it ought to show as a drive. If you open the drive with windows explorer it ought to show every file in the drive. You ought to be bale to copy those files to a new folder on your hard drive. PS CS2 ought to be bale to open any CR2 image in that folder on your drive.

It's conceivable you're trying to view the camera/drive with a utility that doesn't recognize CR2 files as image files. I can't be more specific because I've never had this problem.

Yup, thats exactly what it does, it shows as a drive in My Computer, but when I go in and look for the files, they're not there.... Hmmm... I think I'll give in and call up Canon...

Uhm I read somewhere that you can't get the RAW files from the Camera connected to the PC through the USB, and that you have to use the CF card reader in order to get the RAW files.... I was wondering if that was true?

I don't know. I've always used a card reader. Gawd knows they are cheap enough. You can get them at Staples for under 20 bux.

hahaha yeah, but I haven't really been looking for a CF card reader till now... Was able to get the CR2 files, but now, PS CS2 wont open them, saying theres an error with the document... *sigh* problems problems... is there a plugin i need to install?

CS2 will not open the CR2 files from the XT (yet). The 3.1 version of the ACR (Adobe Raw Converter) does not support that cam. There may be a beta version out that supports it, however I don't know offhand if it is publicly available... I need it anyway if it is available, so I'll go look and post a link if I find it.

Edit: I don't think that the beta version of ACR that I've heard mentioned is a public beta. Probably your only real choice for now is to use the free version of RSE. It does a darn good job, just needs to be done outside PS :-(
