I was cruising around seeing if they still made my old Majestic tripod with the geared head (they do... that was a lovely beast for the 4x5 view camera) and I stumbled across the following, $1,400 geared tripod head by arca-swiss:

Arca-Swiss C-1 Cube. Click on photo to enlarge.

Holy Moly. Reminds me of my Sinar-P view camera. Same sort of radiused tilts inside the sphere.

B+H a ripoff? You are joking right?

EVERYONE charges that much, though, more or less. It's a really, really high-end piece of machine work. I've seen other stuff from Arca-Swiss and, of course, Sinar, the two swiss manufacturers of precision photo stuff, and it's all simply beautiful and jewel-like.

Of course, $1,400 for a tripod head is pretty extreme, but take it in context; there's a PRACTICAL reason for this head, and if you work at the high end of the spectrum and NEED what it offers, it's certainly worth it. The description tells what's unique about it.

Still, $1,400 for a TRIPOD HEAD? jejejeĆ¢„Ā¢

Dang, it's beautiful.... People buy Ferraris too...

Rip off? For a custom machined precision head? Do you have any idea how much a machinist gets paid an hour and how many hours must go into something like that?

I paid $500 for one of my heads and it hasn't 1/3 the time involved in its manufacture.

Right; Arca-Swiss stuff is all hand-machined, by human beings. To extremely exacting tolerances. I remember when we got the Sinar-P, I used to just sit and stare at it for hours, with a glass of wine in hand. Just to use it was a pleasure, silky-smooth and pure. And that was the toughest camera i ever had; I used it for more than 20 years and NEVER had to have it repaired. The gearcourses were nylon and wore and had to be replaced, but that was designed-in and they were not expensive. By making nylon gearcourses they provided an inexpensive, breakable part so if the camera sustained a hard blow the nylon teeth would strip, saving worse damage to much more expensive parts.

But I digress. Ain't that a beautiful thing? Sigh....

Here's a very used example of the Sinar-P on e-bay, lotta shots of it. Makes me nostalgic just looking at it;

I have found B&H to be competitive with their prices.

You have got to be f-ing joking. Seriously, as a mechanical engineer, I think I understand what it takes to machine something like this. It's not a high-volume product. Arca-Swiss is well known for some of the highest quality heads available. Yes, it's outrageous expensive. Either you have a use for what they are offering, or not. To bash the seller is irrational.
