I'd like to suggest adding more categories under the Equipment header especially printers. It would be nice to see who's using what gear and be able to network with them.

Yeah actually agree.... I have really started paying attention to lighting in pictures and would like to see what lighting equipment (flashes, softbox's, ect.) people use for each shot. I think it would really help me move forward a bit.

Yes lighting would be a great category too.

I agree also. Lighting would be an excellent categoory. I'd really like to see how others setup lighting in their shots. |

I agree this would be extremely useful. I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, but I'd be interested in trying to figure out how difficult this would be to implement. For what it's worth, I'm getting married in two weeks and really won't have any time until after I get back. If anyone's interested, though, in trying to start a heirerarchical category list of the different types of equipment we could put on the site, I think that'd help. Ultimately, if we implemented equipment on the site, I'd want it to be as all-encompassing as possible (i.e. to include things like bags and backpacks and even books). |

Thanks for considering this Drew. I guess insofar as compiling a list, people could add their suggestions in this thread first and we could take it from there? Congrats on your big day BTW.

I think you may be going a little too far in depth there. Do I care what lens hood or what brand CF card Joe Smoe is using? Do you? Honestly?
Computers, printers, software, lighting are all categories that will be helpful, but who cares if I use X brand or Y brand batteries to power my flash unit?

Flash cards might be nice. Some people might want to see what the more advanced shooters are using, to see if it's worth the money. Is it really worth the extra cash to by an extreme III over an ultra II?

Whomever owns each one is going to claim they are the best thing since buttered bread, because that is what they own. I just think the little things will clutter up the board and are not that important to getting a good shot.

I'd guess that most of this stuff will only show up in the profile page.
My intention with the in-depth equipment is that you can find a photographer, regardless of his/her talent, and ask him/her about those little details that aren't mentioned in product descriptions. This could help with buying decisions.
Edit: An example:
I have a SanDisk CF UltraII 512MB. I think it was worth buying it, it works well with the RebelXT. Now, if someone has a Powershot G2, like I have, asks me whether it's worth buying an UltraII for his G2, I can tell him that with that model, there is no noticeable increase in speed (personal experience).

I think adding printers and lighting gear would be a wonderful addition to this site! |

I like the concept of the 'details', but see it as rather unweildy to try and implement.
for exapmple:
With this image you now get the camera, lens, and shot settings.
If you want lighting...well, there were compact flourescent in the room but i doubt they did much to influence the shot. I had a Lumedyne something (200ws bought used). It has multiple modes to it....and i used a home made umbrella. Then there was my Metz 54 flash with lightshpere 2. Again, without details like mode, power, height, distance to subject, etc not sure the raw info would do much good. Then inthe BG was a quantarray 370 flash. Do you want info on how this all triggered too? What if, and in this case it was true, i had a starting setting and made minor adjustments as i went along? I never recorded teh changes of light position so i might not remember correclty throwing the whole thing off.
Now if all you want is a list of what I own rather than what i used on that particular shot, we again have issues. My quantarray flash is long discontinued, and my lumedyne stuff is last gen if not older than that. I have custom built stuff (by me and bought that way). How do i list my home made backpack?
Filters are another big nasty list of things...brands, sizes, types and then the filters themselves. Cokin as 3 or 4 systems ad 100+ filters for each one! How do you list some of those generaic filters you can get on ebay?
Like this shot - I used a vivitar all manual 135mm 2.8 lens adaapted to my Rebel with some chinese adapter tubes form ebay...
Just my 2 cents, and if I don't have to do any of the work and can just enjoy the benefits, hey, Go For It!

There's no NEED to put that info everytime you submit a challenge. It's rather something others can see in your profile, or the other way around, a page showing which users have a certain part of equipment.

I would like to see a lighting category. It doesn̢۪t have to show the set up just the type(s) used. I can always bug the photographer if I need more details :) |

There have been several threads started specifically to discuss batteries ...
A formatting suggestion: On the profile page, have a text window which displays the result of using a drop-down list of equipment types; this would display one category of equipment at a time, and keep the page confined to a fixed area. |
