what is the advantage of a slow lens, ie. say a 300mm 6.8f, compared to a 5.6f.

Joke apart, you don't have any advantage from a slow lens from a photographic standpoint.

Size, weight, price. I can't think of any others.
I've got a couple of 300mm f4.5 Nikkor lenses which are about a fifth the volume of my 300mm f2.8 Nikkor. Probably a fifth of the price and certainly more manageable. I wouldn't want to hand-hold the 2.8 ;)
