Hi everyone,
We're going to be driving up to the Shasta region and then to Crater Lake from there.... any tips for photo-ops around that area will be very much appreciated!
And any suggestions for good spots to take pictures at Crater Lake and Mount and Lake Shasta will be great too!
Thanks :)

Crater Lake is awesome! Be sure to bring a wiiiiiiide angle lens. Maybe even rent one (like a 14mm f/2.8L or a 10-22mm) if you don't have one.

thanks for your suggestions!
Mick, do you have any suggestions for good spots from which to take pictures of crater lake? Once again thanks to both of you!

You can drive and hike around the lake, and there are tons of great views. If you go for a hike, don't go alone. There are lots of places to fall. Be sure to get some shots of Wizard Island.

There are lots of web sites that may give you some pointers and ideas, such as the National Park Service.

I've been there many times, but not since I really got into digital photography. The last time we were there I had young kids to watch out for, and I only had a 1MP camera. :) I have lots of good film shots though, from long ago.

Try to go in the early AM for the light and so you'll have plenty of time and won't be rushed. You'll love it.

Same area has Lassen Volcanic National Park, which is spectacular. A terrific short hike takes you into "Bumpass hell", which is chock full of photo opportunities of geothermal activity.

about 30 miles away from Crater Lake is Diamond Lake.....great family place to go....either stay in cottages, motels or in the campgrounds around the lake. Absolutely gorgeous! There's Mount Thielson and Bailey's Bowl that you can drive to from the Lake....great overview of Diamond Lake and the Valley....I've only been up there during the winter time (on snowmobiles) but I imagine it's just as gorgeous during the Summer :)

If you keep going north a couple hours, Willamette Pass on highway 58 has Gondola rides up the mountain. You can hike and picnic, and I imagine the views would be breathtaking - especially around sunset.

Same for Mt. Bachelor if you kept going north on 97. //summer.mtbachelor.com/

Good luck!

When we went you could take a tour boat ride of the lake in Crater Lake, I also *think* you could get off on Wizard Island for a short bit.

We would've gone but they made a point to mention the hike down (and thus back up) was extremely strenuous.. so its something to think about.

I don't recall the pricing off-hand either. I want to say $15 per person but I could be off.

There is a hotel/lodge right on the edge of Crater Lake where you can sit and watch the sunset on rocking chairs crafted out of logs on the verandah, the staff bring out blankets as it can get cool at night, we stayed there for one 4th July weekend. Be prepared for mosquitos! You may need to book ahead during the popular times. There are several vantage points around the rim of the lake but I found the more picturesque ones were from the Lodge. We did a boat ride around the lake (and you will have an option to step off onto Wizard Island to wander around but we decided not to take that option). That can be a steep, strenous and HOT walk down and one can get very thirsty, there will be no water facilities so take plenty of water to drink. The boat ride is very cooling and takes about an hour I think. You may have a long wait to get tickets for the boat ride before the hike down to where you board it, I would advise you to find out the times the boat leaves and give ample time to purchase one or you will have a long wait for the next boat or two. It depends on which time of the year you do this.

I may post photos in the next day or so if I have a chance.

Crater Lake

This photo was taken from the parking lot near the lodge during winter.
