i have a gateway computer with a gateway monitor. when the computer is turned on, the monitor says "Self Test" your monitor is working properly, please check your computer connection or power....the monitor was disconnected and tested on another computer and did not do this therefore i know its the computer. does anyone know how to get rid of the self test. BTW safe mode is not working either. the comp is 2 yrs old and is a 310 Series. Thanks.

Self test should be coming from the monitor not the computer. I would say that either something is wrong with your video card, the video card inside the computer, or the computer itself. Assuming everything is plugged in right and turned on. Just my guess. :)

You can eliminate variable this way:

try a different monitor on your PC (unlikely to be the prob)

Pull the video card and try it in a different PC (likely the problem)

Could be the video card has rocked itself out of the slot.

When you boot do you hear any series of beeps? Most sytems will beep at you in a different way than normal if your video card is missing or defective.

Does the fan on the PC come on?

First focus on the operation of the PC.

1. When you turn it on does the fan in the back come on?
2. Do you hear any beeps?
3. Do you see any activity from the lights on the front?

I can only add a little here.
I have had three Gateway Pc's and all three have done the self test.
I don't think it really means much but did find the link below. Hope it works out for you.

Ok several things here. Shut the system off completly and let it power down for a few hours then try (if you havent done this already) If it works for a while then stopps it is prolly a dry joint on the circut bord, replace the card.
It could be the vid card is loose. Take the case off the computer tower and look in a straight line with where the monitor plugs in, this should be the vid card . now if it appears the Monitor plugs into the Main board the well get a new card, if it is a card that plugs into the main board then remove it carefully(touch somthong bare metal first to ground yourself) then carefully reinsert it and make sure it is completly seated well.
If it still is an issue or you dont feel comfortable doing this then call the manuf support number
