It would be nice to show the rules for member only challenges to everyone, but not allow submission for non-members. For example, free study sounds very enticing (especially if there is not time frame as with regular challenges), but I wouldn't know as I haven't subscribed yet. Knowing more of what we're missing in terms of rules leniency on members challenges might entice us to join...

I think the rules for the member challenge are basically the same as the other one. I don't know if there are special rules for that one. The member challenge "Free Study" is just contest where we can take a picture of anything this week. - I hope.

There is a way of seeing all the challenge details & extra rules for all challenges, regardless of whether you're a user or a member - click on the 'challenges' item in the menu, and you'll be taken to the main challenges index page, which lists all the current challenges with thei rules and thumbnails for your entries etc...

So is it the case that the picture for the Members Only "Free" challenge need not be taken this week?

It says in the "rules at a glance" to the left of the submission page, that the photo has to be taken within the deadline dates.

That's great -- I hadn't even seen that page yet! I checked to see what categories were listed under the Challenges menu, but didn't think to click on the header itself. I see now that each menu has a page associated with it...

No, the 'free' challenge shots must be taken within the normal deadlines, as the rules state, since there are no extra rules on the challenge that override this.

Why are there so fewer submissions to the members only challenge? Do people not like the idea of a free study?
12/07/2002 02:32:09 PM · #9
There are fewer members than normal users, also the challenge only started on Wednesday, which means that it hasn't been running as long.

Personally, I found it a lot tougher to come up with an idea for free study as well!

If things continue like this, it'll be weird to get my highest-ever ranking and still end up nearer to last place!

GeneralE,
You don't have last place locked in yet. I just entered.
Good Luck

It´s like that for me too. I think we had a poll once about special themes or free themes. And I remember I voted for special themes. I also think that the photos are going to be better in the "Free study" challenge, just because it´s free. People can go out and shoot hundreds of shots of whatever they want and then pic the best one. When there is a special theme you must think, think and think again. It´s more a combination of photography skills and finding out a good idea.

Autool --
Thanks. Although at least you have one laurel to rest on...I still think someday we should have some kind of a "bad photo" challenge with low score winning, somewhat along the lines of the annual Bulwer-Lytton writing contest.
Good luck to you too!

Am I doing something wrong?? When I click on the header it takes me to a page that shows only the Motion, Blue and Photojournalism challenges.

Spiller, The "free study" challenge is a members only challenge, for the paid members. There are more features for paid members, however everything from DPC1 is still free, just some bonuses for the paid ones. One bonus being the members only challenges. The fee is $5 a month, or $25 a year. If you pay the yearly rate, it's just over $2 a month.
It's great fun on the flip side too!!
~Heather~
ADDITION...Looks like the members only challenges are marked with the little blue man icon. Paid members are marked also by the little blue icons.
