Hi,
I am a beginner at this and I am planning to get a dSLR for myself sometime soon. And since winter is a good 3 months away, are there things about the cold (here in new york) that I should watch out for? Like condensation and stuff? Would it damage my camera or lens? |

Condensation can be a problem. In winter, the problem occurs when you come in from the cold outside to the warm inside. The camera mayvbe below the dew point and if so, moisture will condense. You can minimize this by keeping the cam in the bag and leaving the bag closed, warming the camera slowly. Inside dew points are normally pretty low, so it's not necessary to fully warm it up to avoid condensation.
Cold weather operation can tax batteries, it's good to keep an extra battery warm by keeping in an inside pocket, and exchange if necessary. Then put the cold battery in the pocket, warm it up and it will recover; it has not lost charge, just the ability to deliver it.

Hi Paolo. Yes, there are things to consider when using a camera in cold weather; and they apply for all types of digicams, not just DSLRs. Basically you must give your camera a chance adjust to different temperatures gradually, especially going from the colder, outside air to the warmer air indoors. Condensation will form out of the warmer, relatively wetter, air onto cold surfaces, inside and out, of camera and lenses. One often used method to avoid this is to put your camera into a plastic bag and leave it sealed for about a half hour or so to, allow it to come up to room temperature without exposing it to the moisture in the warmer air.
