I have a question concerning the gray scale gradient at the bottom of voting and submission pages... Is it to tell if the whites and blacks are true in an image? Should any of those middle squares blend into the gray of the voting page?

I've submitted a few images that were too dark for some viewers so I'm curious (I never paid real attention to my monitor calibration until now... yikes...)

EDIT:
Perhaps the screen should be able to show all the squares as distinct gradient notches? I often work on a laptop and if I tilt the screen at a specific angle, none of the squares blend together...

Good question. I would like to know, as well.

The 4th one blends pretty well for me - not completely, but the middle disappears. I think the sides don't because of the colors next to them, so I'd say the 4th one. :)

You should be able to see the "line" between each. I had to play with my brightness and contrast a bit until I could see each block, but now I can.

I don't think knowing which box is blending with the background is going to help too much. It will likely be the same one for everybody because your screen controls are affecting the entire screen. In other words, you cannot alter one part (the background) without altering the other (the grayscale slide).

I think it is there for you to judge whether your screen is in proper contrast. You should be able to differentiate all 16 shades from each other and the white should be white and the black should be black. If that is the case and you think the photo is too light or too dark, then it is the photo's problem and not your screen's.

Thanks for the replies to my question! It makes sense...

They are there to check your calibration; if you can't see differences between all the squares, you need to adjust.

NO, none of the squares blend with the voting page. The closest they come is block 4(225)and block 5(216), on the scale of white being 255 and black being 0. The vote pages color is (221).
