create a single, flattened layer of several images that give the motion, or movement of the image?

In other words, I have 7 frames of the same image, a surfer. I would like to take these 7 frames and make one, seamless image from the 7.

I can not figure it out, looking for advice, or maybe somewhere in the "How'd they do that?" threads.

Thanks in advance.

you mean a video out of stills or something else?

Do you mean merging all 7 into a single frame, or stitching them seamlessly side-by-side?

you want to put the 7 together as 1 image, to make it look like the surfer is 'moving'?

Ive seen it done...

taking the seven images of the surfer, and make one frame, layered, but all seven are clear images that shows the surfer in 7 differant positions.

does that make more sense I quess?

Yeah it makes sense. I've seen it done too. I don't know how to do it though.

I've seen this done when there's a stationary background (like for a skateboarder or a BMX biker) but I don't see how it could work for a surfer. The wave he's riding (and all others to boot) are going to be in different positions in each of your 7 shots. How can you merge that?

Thats mean, but I love it...

Assuming all images were taken with exactly the same positioning. Ie, the background identical, you could create "Garbage Masks" on each frame, and leave the bottom most frame as the background. This would give a sequence of the surfer, surfing the wave.

I've seen this done in snowboarding magazines, it works quite well, but it may not work so well with a moving wave...

The other option is to have the surfer clipped completely on each frame... If you could post examples of the images I may be able to give a better explanation. Feel free to PM and Ill see how I can help you out.

Cheers,
Simon

These are by Imagineer...If I remember correctly, he chose one picture as the base layer and then cut out or masked the others just to leave the moving figure and then stacked all these images on top of the base.

That works pretty well (the imagineer stuff) but it would be a LOT harder to do that with a surfer 'cuz the board's IN the wave, leaving a wake and all.... And the wave's a moving thing, where imagineer's figures are arrayed over a static background.

What I did for this one is I used the photo merge in photo shop but chose to keep layers separate. Then went in and erased what was in the way one layer at a time. Like some one posted earlier you can chose one image as a base then cut and paste pieces of the others into it but with that you are stuck with the boundaries of one frame. With surfing you have the wake like bear_music posted and I don’t know how you would get around this. The only surfing photos I have seen to use this technique are ones involving lip snap turns since their isn't too much movement, distance wise.

Everyone I have talked to about this has their own way of doing it so I would say try both the ways I listed here if neither work you may have to think of something new.

If you can’t figure out what I am saying post it here or PM me and I will try to write a step by step mini tutorial to show how I accomplished this. I am in the middle of a move back to the States from Germany but I will try to put something together for whoever wants it.

If you could post like three of the pictures, or similar ones, so I can see what you would like to combine that would help too.
